Due to old injuries I got away from using stickbows and this site for a few years. But, I miss both, so am thinking about trying again. I’ve read a lot of old threads on low poundage set ups for deer, but could still use some help.

I sold or gave away all of my equipment so need to start from scratch. I don’t want to invest a lot at this point in case it doesn’t pan out.

I mainly need help with arrow build. I’m going to purchase a 35# Black Hunter longbow. Will use carbon arrows and I much prefer 175 grain 3 blade VPA broadheads. I know some will question using a 3 blade, but I can get them very sharp, much more so than 2 blades.

I draw 28”. I ran this through 3 Rivers Spine Calculator and get a lot of different possibilities depending on arrow length.

I would appreciate suggestions on brand, spine, length and any other thoughts that can help me out.

Thanks in advance. Toby

If I were going to shoot carbon I would decide the arrow length I wanted mad then order that spine in that length in Big Jim's Dark Timber arrows or shafts and be done with it.

But I'm not big on overcomplicating things.

keep it simple and enjoyable. don't focus on what you can't do anymore but on what you can right now and learn your limitations/boundaries. there is no reason not to be productive even at lighter poundages. For some people, some things can be overcome but for others, it is about adjusting and adapting to what you can do. The main thing is to keep it fun and enjoyable, while understanding that some things may take a little longer to get good at than they used to. Good luck Sir

I shoot a yellowstone half breed longbow pulling 40 pounds at my draw length of 27"-27.5". I shoot a 29" easton legacy with a 150 -175 grain tip and it shoots real nice. Total arrow weight is 407 with a 150 grain tip.I had a lot of trouble shooting left and tried different spines and tip weights only to find out it was operator error. I will probably try the VPA as you mentioned or the woodsman elite as I like the 3 blade in a steep taper. As FDP said dont overcomplicate...the more I paid attention to my form and alignment my shooting improved alot with help from numerous people on this board.

VPA 3 blades are a great choice!

Check out 600 for your carbons. The Black Hunter is a good choice. I own 2 of the.

Welcome back.

600 probably but don't be afraid of 700 spine

Yeah 600 or 700 I favor 700

Forgot to mention I'm shooting 600 spine with the easton legacy's.

600s 29”+

I would say 600s at 30 or 700s at 29 give or take some fractions of an inch. I'm partial to gold tip traditionals but that is by no means a reason not to try others, just what I've learned works for ME.

I think you've picked a great way to step back in, good luck!

I use 2040 predators full length. 125 field tips. They spine in the 650's. I have been able to tune all my low poundage bows with that arrow.
