Anyone have any tutorials on good ways to camo paint an ugly old recurve? Id like to make it interesting.

just did it on a old bear cub, pretty easy sand down with some 300- 400 grit. clean with rubbing alcohol, I used 3 colors, paint light to dark, bought some camo stencils on Amazon and cut them and applied with masking tape, final coat was a clear coat to protect , came out pretty good, did watch some videos on you tu7be.

I do the same, but use leaves, sticks, pine branches etc, whatever for the look I want.

Give it a good base coat and then take to it with natural sponges cut and shaped to your desire. Takes less than a day. I like to start with a lite brown bas and the flat black strips. Then comes the sponge with greens, dark browns, moss green and a light gray. Never had one turn out to disappoint anyone yet. error on the dark side.

Paint the entire bow in a dull green, then get some leaves from different trees and hold them here and there and spray dull grey.

What keepemsharp said, is the way I have always done it, but I have not done a recurve yet like that. However, back in the day, I did every compound bow, I ever owned, that way. We all believed that you had to, to kill deer, back then. But of course, we know that is not true. However, A lot of the old compounds came with a high gloss finish, so it made some sense to paint them or dull them in some way.

I used to do like keepemsharp also many years ago. Spray the bow flat green. Cut a oak leave shape from a piece of like construction paper. Tape an old arrow or a stick to one side so you can hold it and fog flat black around the edges. That's simple, but you could add a couple other colors if you want.

I have painted a couple. Results were good imo and it’s held up great.

I lightly sanded with 220 grit. Primed with self etching primer, painted with spray can rustolem or Kylon camo paints. Cleared with the same brand spray can in satin I think it was.

AFTER SEVERAL TRIAL RUNS MULTIPLE LIGHT COATS WORKED BEST.

Probably did 3-5 very light coats.

made my own stencils but you can find a lot online if you want to get fancy.

i intentionally didn’t sand off the original finish so it be easy to restore if I ever wish too.

Pretty common practice in the 60 & 70’s pretty plain and simple. Like the original camo Bear bows. Sometimes just a flat solid color.

I ve painted mine solid Krylon olive drab. That color seems to blend in with gray trees too.

Yes sir. I have painted a few just plain old OD green and they look great.

From one who has removed paint from a bow, please don't paint any old Browning or Wings.

Thanks.

You can always have it dipped. Much more durable than a rattle can.

I was a huge fan of Jim Krumley's Trebark back in the 80/90s and tried my best to replicate the pattern. First, I would spray the bow black (all paints are flat). Second, I would cut irregular 1 to 10" strips of masking tape 1/8 to 1/4" wide. Place the strips on the bow in a sort of "tree bark" pattern. Next, uaing brown and gray spray the "bark" pieces between the masking tape randomly. Some would be all brown, some all gray and some would overlap. The fun part is removing the tape. Been too long ago for any pictures.
