Made my own strings since my first traditional bow... which I also made... and have made them ever since. I've never in my life bought a string for a bow. Not a big deal.

I know you said time was the issue, but I can’t recommend enough that you take the time to learn to make them yourself in the future. It’s too easy to do and being able to do it on a whim if you want to change colors or you need a string in a hurry to not at least try to make them. I won’t mention the names of the string makers but prices have skyrocketed from $10-15 tops to some guys getting $40+ for a string. I’ve debated this before and I know if you have a business there’s definitely more investment needed that gets passed down to the customer but it literally takes me 30 minutes to build and stretch a string and I figured my cost is less than $2 a string, plus it’s a fun way to take more ownership of the traditional experience

Yeah, if you're going to build a few, best to learn to build your own you'll save a ton of money real quick. They're not hard to do and there's some videos on YouTube. I built a simple measuring board and watch the video from bearpaw and started building strings. I'm not going to say mine are as good as some of the super fancy builders here, but they seem to work and be consistent which is all I ask of them

I had one of Ten rings stings on my longbow when it came unglued and broke the horn tip. Not sure what caused the failure if it was the bow or the string. Called Allen and talked with him, he sent me another string that is still on the bow after a new tip was installed.

I simply cannot understand how Barry can sell strings, even B55, for $10. I have been building strings for years, and at best it takes me a 1/2 hour to twist one up, not counting stretching and serving.. factor in materials and mailing , there’s not much room for profit.

I used to think everyone should make their own strings but have found out that things that are second nature to me are confusing to many folks, no matter how many times you show them what to do.
I found this to be true on string making, selfbow building, flintlock rifle building and duck decoy carving.
It could be I don't mind goofing up and starting over a bunch of times while learning a process, for other folk, one failure shuts them permanently.
I do think more people should give string making a try, it only costs a spool of B-50, some serving material, a scrap board with some nails pounded in at the right place and watching a few videos on YouTube.
I have been using this string jig for at least 30 years and have probably made more than a thousand strings on it. The feet on the bottom are so I can hold it between my knees and make strings sitting in a chair or recliner while I watch TV.

String making is not a big investment to make, just some time. You can make the string board or buy one, B50/B55 is cheap and the material I recommend people to use to learn with, "String Making Wax" (a BIG plus), a serving tool, and serving material (for a 14 strand B50/B55 I use BCY #62 0.018 serving material). Before I got my stretching clamps from BCY that uses a piece of Uni-strut. I would make the string, put it on the bow length I made it for, and put the serving on while the bow was strung. Did it that way for years. I learned to make the String Board and to make strings form the Byron Ferguson VHS Tape "Become The Arrow" (VHS who remembers those). I had to make some adjustments for his recommended markings for what he used for bow length on the String Board. His marking just came out to long for my liking. Thing is you have to know, you won't make it right the first time, but that is okay, The more you make the better you get at it. It's not hard to do, but it does take a little time learning to manipulating your fingers to twist it up. Could you shoot a traditional bow correctly out of the box and hit what you are aiming at? The more you make the better you get at it. That is why I recommend starting with B50/B55, mistakes are cheap when learning and the string material does make a good bow string. We used it for decades even on compounds. I also use it to pad my loops for a High Performance Strings. I tore many strings apart and put back together again because I screwed up when learning. Still do occasionally because I miss measure. Until you do, then Championship Bow Strings, Chad Weaver ([email protected]) is a good choice. He "may" still have some DVD's left that tells the way he make bow strings (there are a few ways people do it). I know, more info than you asked for, but I hope it gives you something to think about. DANNY
