So I was talking to Justin at church this morning and his 6 year old daughter was with him. We were talking about bows and shooting so I looked down to her and asked her if she had been shooting any. Averie was pretty quiet at first and just smiled to her dad. He asked her if she had a bow or not. She smiled and nodded yes.
But then I asked her if she had hunted with her bow with her father. Her face lit up as she nodded yes. Then her father said that she had shot at an armadillo and a possum. So I asked her if she had done this. Averie smiled and said yes, that she had almost killed them both.
I knew that Justin had shot a skunk with his bow so I just kiddingly as if she had shot at a skunk. Immediately she really perked up and said yes, that she had even chased it to get her shot. She was very proud of it too as I glanced back to Justin.
Justin nodded that she did just that but then explained that he didn't know what she was after at first because he couldn't see what she was after. He had thought that she might have seen a rabbit. But after she had shot her bow, he saw the skunk taking off. He said that he had to grab her to keep her from going after it again.
Averie was very talkative now as she said that she was going to be like her father and hunt deer with her bow. Justin smiled and told me that he could not practice shooting without her joining him with her bow.
Averie told me that one day, she would get some real arrows with the good points for killing deer. Justin smiled real big as he told me, "That's my girl!" Averie just smiled to me and answered, "Yes I am!"
Justin assured me that skunks were off her list to hunt now. In her eyes, the bow and arrow are the most fun thing ever. Looked like a family thing now to me.
