That's how i got started bow building probably 30 yrs ago now.
wanted a new bow and thought...aw heck i can just make my own.
I Almost never hire anyone out for services, Occasionally an auto repair but even then only if i don't have time.
Fix it, build it or make your own.
new a guy (farmer)in western MD that took 3 different tractors and built 1 out of them. Thing ran like a gem, it takes some skill to start altering flywheels, trans, crankshafts etc...to make something run properly. He is probably the most inventive person i know, made the furnace in his home, moved a barn by dividing it in half then putting back together in the new location. Made his own sawmill etc...

I definitely tinker. I mean, isn't that what the whole process of arrow tuning is? Try this, try that, see what's better or worse. Make a few modifications to a riser or shelf. So on and so forth.
I build other stuff from scratch; electric guitars and wood working projects mostly. A lot of that started in college when I had more time (i.e., no kids) but less cash on hand. Im fortunate now to have more income but not as much time free time after work and chores are done. So, I build what's satisfying and hire out or buy what I don't want to spend my time doing.

HaHa Glad I’m not the only Tinker-er around!…
But…I’m sure the 3in1 Tractor is Waaaayyyyy past my personal Tinker Skills :)…
But it has elevated My thoughts haha Thanks!!!…
I used this quiver,…which I believe used to be a Sagittarius manufactured…as I could keep Judo Tips and Blunts within easy reach and to keep me from grabbing them instead of a Broadhead bearing arrow during the heat of battle…one particular broadside at 7 yards…Big 6x7 Bull Elk comes to mind and Haunts me Regularly :0… 4finger

I tinker with arrows, shaft material, feather shape, color, length, number of feathers, point weight.Made a few back quivers. Repurposed a few bow quivers into a side belt mount and over the shoulder strap versions.

I used to tinker a lot more when I was younger. Besides other things I even made my own arrow shafts and cresting machine (pictured) in my younger days. But now that I'm a senior citizen I tinker a lot less. I'd rather spend more of my time scouting and bowhunting.

I have been a tinkerer all of my life, not so much archery, though, except for arrow rests modifications, Frankin bows, and arrows, oh and also quivers.
But growing up as a farmer's son, and later most all of my adult life, I was a fabricator for a construction company and we built, designed, modified, and troubleshooted about everything under the sun. I wasn't an engineer, but engineers often called me to solve their problems, and often just turned me loose to solve it. When they were in trouble, I am the one they called.
One thing that got me a lot of work, though, is the way I responded to their needs. I used to have a saying, or sort of a private motto, between some of us at work. "I am probably not the cheapest, and I may not even be the best, but I can start right now, if you have an emergency". (: That I could always think outside the box.
But yeah, I made my living that way for nearly 40 years, building one off, crazy stuff, that my competitors would often not even want to touch.

I do also. When I elk hunted I did not want the quiver on the bow, but wanted to put it on there when I was not hunting. So, I got an extra quikee quiver bracket, made a leather holster for my belt and bolted the bracket to the holster. Wala, when on a stalk or in elky stuff I would pull the quiver off the bow and snap it to my holster. When moving through or in the truck/camp I had it on my bow.

I like to think I tinker and re-purpose. My wife (who still works) says I just Dink Around.... tomato to-MAT-o. Its all good.
Having the nearest Menards 50 miles away round trip, you tend not to throw stuff away and sometimes get creative with whats at hand.

At the heart if one looks at archery tinkering lead to folks seeking tbe ability to have repeated accuracy in shooting a bow. It lead us to the modern compound bow, and in general it is human nature to tinker ti find better ways to do things. I tend to tinker/tune my arrows, and such. I think we all at heart tend to tinker without even realizing we are doing it. I tinker trying to maintain my shooting abilities—the journey never ends.

Too much. Heck I salvage ever buckle, fastener, and strap I can find. Never know when I will need parts from a pair of leaky waders to improve a bino harness. I was just fishing through them this morning.

I have a friend who was designed and sold many things. Depending on the product of course, his advice to me was this. The best defense against other companies stealing your design is to make the best widget of its kind.
Patents aren’t the safeguard everyone thinks they are. To get one you put your lawyers first kid through college. Then every time someone infringes on it you put another kid through college and the odds are high all you get is to have a cease and desist order applied. Or they make a tiny modification and circumvent your patent. (Yes, I know it’s not quite that much, but it is still a large drain)

A friend of mine spent the money on a patent of a fishing lure, a very popular one. Then a larger company started selling them. My friend contacted the larger company and they told him, then go ahead and sue us. They did not care and knew they would not spend the money to go after them. A patent attorney told me to get a non- disclosure statement before going to company's with a design idea.

Exactly. I have copies of my machine out there too. Don't show it to another company. Make some prototypes, decide if you want to continue or try and sell the idea.

A well kept trade secret is better than a patent, in the cases where there is a secret efficient method of production.
Another protection is to sell the product so cheap that it's not worth anybody's cost or time to start producing it.
Nobody has copied my two little items because of these two protections.
