Besides your everyday rugs and half mounts, does anyone display their bear hides differently? TIA

Lately a lot of guys do a "mount" with an antique back pack....they hav ethe hide tanned and mount the bears head and roll up the hide like it's being "packed out"....here is a photo of a reproduction "Nelson" style back pack that I made. This one has risers on it, but just imagine a mounted bear head and rolled up hide.....

Years ago Dwight Shuh wrote about bear hides in his "Bowhunter Magazine" column. After he had all the rugs he wanted he would skin them out cased and have them tanned. He had a picture of a row of bear hides just displayed hanging like on a closet pole. Looked really nice for some one who hunts bear every year and wants to keep the hides.

I'd need a tailgate to mount it on :)

Hmmm, some seat covers for my truck might be nice. But never shot a bear and likely never will.

The pack idea is a great one. After several rug mounts over the years ( you only need so many), my sons have gone to tanned hides for bear, coyote, etc. They give that old-fashioned look to a shop or man cave. One has some old bear and wolf traps with them, along with various skunk, raccoon, bobcat, otter, badger, and a few other hides. Makes it feel like you went back a couple of hundred years.

Here's one I made a few years ago from a smaller bear hide. Made the frame as close to "old time" as I could.

Where do you find tanneries to do wild animal hides? Do any of you have recommendations?

There a lot of things that can be done with tanned hides…

Ordinary things become Special over time...this Buck has resided in the garage attic the past 30 plus years...a memory of a quick trip to Colorado and my Friend/Hunting Partner who passed away back a few years-John Call Sr...

We along with our sons had some Great times...Mostly hunting Waterfowl...

but putting this years Christmas stuff back in the attic... those memories came back...

I felt it was only fitting to put this buck out where I could see it more often and remember the times "back when"...pulling down the PackFrame that has been on more trips with me than I can remember and having a spare cape that I had used for parts...well you can guess the rest...There's a lot of Truth about the saying IdleHands" RIP Buddy…

Good Luck on Your Bear Mount…4finger
