Ok, I'm going to try this again.. There seems to be an opinion that the pay for an archery position is very poor.. While it isn't something you can get rich off of, it isn't that shabby either. For the right person.. We are offering approximately $40K - $50K depending on knowledge. Requiring minor training is acceptable, but they must have some background knowledge of traditional archery and willing to work approximately 10 weekends a year.

Duties.. to include but not limited to: Sales and technical help in office and at events. Working events between February and August. Other office duties such as inventory, packing and who knows.. computer knowledge is beneficial. Please email me at [email protected] BigJim

Can I work from home? Just kidding of course! I've been hearing that alot lately, so I just thought I'd find out what it feels like to say it once. On a serious note, good luck Jim.

I only wish that I were in a position to consider a career change! Making a living in traditional archery would be a blast. Best of luck in your search.

I can't believe you'd have trouble filling that job! If I lived in the South, I'd apply, under a fake name, and you'd hire me immediately when you saw my selling skills, plus the fact I'm the best bowhunter in the world. However, I'm up here in the land of sky-blue water!

Wasn’t there a young lady around here pretty recently asking about careers in archery? Maybe it was Bowsite? I recall she was from down south and looking for something pretty much in line with what Jim just described - except that I wouldn’t have thought that it could pay that well.

I’d take a hard look at that gig myself, if it weren’t so far from home/family…. And so close to the heat & humidity!! Just not prepared to deal with the weather down there just yet..

think he would pay you to stay up there

Jim, if I was retired, I can see applying for that job, just to give me something to do and be around archery....

Jim,

Hopefully you find someone. This is a national problem greatly effecting small business that goes largely ignored by the current administration. We are competing with the Government for jobs. Don't get me started on the average applicant from the younger generation and the parents who raised them that way.

An example at the local level, the morning news just did a story about the township hiring. So they free advertising for the local govt. jobs.

Me too i need a good retirement job

From: Viper

Jim -

Don't know the situation where you are, but most ranges/pro shops around me generally employ retirees and / or high school / college kids. $40-50K isn't going to support a family in my neck of the woods, not any more anyway. Just reality.

Viper out.

Sounds like a great position for a retired younger guy who loves archery. Jim you need to tell, them that those 10 weekends are during hunting season while your out hunting lol. Hope you get a good guy or gal in there.

From: tradslinger
Date: 16-Mar-23

I sure hope that you find someone. I once worked for free for these people opening up an archery shop in my home town, did it for 4 or 5 months, I just wanted someone to succeed. They ended up not being very good with people.

You need to advertise free beer and good looking women. There will be plenty of applicants then.

I helped BigJim one year at Denton unload a lot of his merchandise some years ago. Who ever gets this job better plan on WORKING. He even has more stuff now. Unloading was bad enough, the packing it back up, well I wasn't there for that. He also doesn't travel short distances for the shoots he travels to for us. He needs someone who will be dedicated and I hope he finds them. DANNY

Yep. They ruined New York state. I have 4 cousins that have retired and moved to Florida and 1 that went to Arizona. I know a few guys that would take Big Jim's job offer it they lived there.

Linecutter, I have greatly reduced the effort needed to set up/tear down.. It has gone from an 8 hour +- set up 3 hour tear down to aproximately 2 hour set up 1 1/2 hour tear down. The tent is much easier to set up and we don't completely unload the trailer. We still bring the same amount of inventory though.

Having said that, the drives can be a bit long but I have a very comfortable motorhome to make it more enjoyable.

I don't want to discount the amount of effort involved, but all have enjoyed going to the events. At least to most of the events.

Sounds like a fun opportunity. I suggest thumbs down for any applicant dumb enough to say anything at all about politics.

Hire somebody who is easy to like and skilled enough already to do and enjoy the business side. No recent government employees :-)

From: jk
Date: 17-Mar-23

...also, don't hire anybody who wants to re-locate. That would make grief if you have to fire them.

Hire somebody who already has a local life.

From: Bob Rowlands

Jim walks out the side door and shoots. Viper drives two hours to shoot.

Shot both of my ThunderChildren today on the shores of Lake Superior near Larsmont, Minnesota. Went out snowshoeing and shot stumps with my 54 inch 45 pounder. Then when I got back, pulled out the 50 pound 58 incher and gave it a workout.

I just don't know how to beat this longbow. I love em.

If I lived down there I would already be working for you. Please tell all of your employees how much JOY you bring to your customers. I can never get enough - i shoot every day.

And I also own a Desert Bignorn, and a Buffalo, and a Mountain Monarch. I love em all - but the ThunderChildren are my favorites.

Totally unrelated to your request but thank you and all your employees for the hours of fun and stress relief you have given me.

There are lots of other benefits for an archery/hunting enthusiast that works here, but it is still work.. well, sort of. Everyone here is expected to earn their keep.

I have a 50 target Rinehart 3d range in my back yard. I get invites to hunt all over the world.. some of those allow for guests. I take my hunting crew to the midwest for a diy rut deer hunt every year. There are discounts on archery goods including some relatively decent custom bows. ... and I am in a lease that has lots of pigs.. some of which are true fatties!

I am not a difficult person to get along with.. I would recommend having thick skin however as we like to joke around, but sometimes I mean it. Maybe fishing is more your speed! The older I get the more I realize that life is about adventure.. well, and hunting dogs, bows and guns :)

Man.. If only I were closer to Idaho, oklahoma, Texas, .... :)

I hear it all the time, there's no trad shops near me! Well, there are not enough trad shooters to support a shop in every area. Even less potential trad employees!

Please pass the word along. Thanks, bigJim
