Call your local state biologist and ask them. That, in addition to knocking on doors, has been the most effective for me. State biologists usually know when landowners are interested in leasing their property, especially in a state where leasing is permitted through the state.

Good luck!

If you are looking for your own land to lease I would start with timber companies websites. Not sure what there is as far as timber companies around you but they are large land holders and lease most of it for hunting. If you want to get into a lease with other like minded folks you should ask every friend or coworker you can if they lease.

The biggest issue with hunting lease is get into one where you are in a different page than everyone else or everyone wants something different out of it. It won’t work to just say everyone do what they want and we will all be happy. Once you find a lease study their rules and make sure you know how they typically hunt and if it is agreeable to you.

Onx is a good resource for land tax maps. It lists the name & address of the person or company paying the taxes on a particular tract of land

HLN.com? I get a health information consultant or something.

Leasing land is ruining hunting for the average person. At least that's what I've heard from people that live in states where most of private land for hunting is leased.

It's getting crazy. Where Ilive a nock on the door, fallowed by a 30 min conv. And a hand shack usually lands you a spot. Then there is a weekend trip that leads to thousands of acers of prime public ground. And no it's not over run. That I can see never see anyone in the woods.

I think what ruined hunting was the fact that it got so popular with people who have so much money to throw around.

I don't know if I can find or afford a lease but it's been a VERY LONG time since I've had anyplace to hunt close to home to hunt.

I have to find a different approach or just give up hunting. In other words hunting was "ruined" a long time ago as far as I'm concerned.

I don't know where you live but knocking on doors won't get you very far around here. Anybody with huntable land here hunts it themselves or they lease it. Otherwise, they just aren't going to leave woods standing where they could grow corn. And there are a LOT of people looking to hunt here so the demand is about as high as it could get.

So this is some advice & I'll admit that I've dumb lucked into some good hunting spots. (well sort of) I am not a horn-trophy hunter. A freezer full of venison is my priority. Between my son & myself we average 20+ deer a season. I have a reputation for killing a lot of does and have actually been approached by farmers about killing does on their property. Not saying I don't kill bucks cause I do but at a ratio of about 10 does to every 1 buck.

Times have changed and I believe approaching a land owner with a deer herd control approach as apposed to a can I hunt your land approach is much better.

Think about it. Your offering a free service to them as opposed to asking to use their land for personal gain.

Try starting out as all game squirrel are varmint hunting to get a foot in the door.

Started there many years ago. If you read what I already said... over the years I've had a number of people let me hunt squirrels. In every case the property was off limits once deer season opened 10/1.

In recent years all those places dried up too. I didn't even have a place to squirrel hunt this year.

Some call it leasing we call it cancer.

So are you guys who don't like leasing offering to have me come out and hunt your ground? I never wanted to lease and I really can't afford it. This a last resort effort to find someplace to hunt.

I asked for leasing advice. If you can't help maybe you could find something to do with yourself elsewhere. I could make some suggestions if it would help.

Go to the game preserves or Hoosier National Forest.

Leasing is not ruining hunting, not even close.

Post ads on the bulletin boards at all the feed stores and livestock sale barns.

Sheets, I love hunting the Hoosier national forest. The problem is that it's so far away.

Aside from looking for a lease the other part of the plan is to try really hard to set aside some vacation time for hunting down there.

I do put some effort into local wma but...ours are special but not in a good way.

Weather permitting I'm taking my new treestand on my back and heading into a small pice of public land tomorrow...IF there there is parking space left.

It's sort of an experiment to see if I can even still carry all that stuff out to where I need to go.

Some good suggestions, thanks.
