Ok , so the trad police may come drag me from my home, stomp and break my draw finger and dislocate my bow arm and take me away to room 101 but it won’t change the facts. I did but some tradvanes on some cedars and they shoot beautifully!!!! The specs; bow is a 62” Tembo 40@27, arrows are 5/16 30/35 27 1/4” from nock groove to bop dipped 4 coats of polycrylic. They shoot interchangeably with feathered arrows with no noticeable difference. I haven’t shot broadheads yet but expect similar results. I’m gonna make a full dz with 6 broadheads 3 blunts and 3 judos.

If it works for you. How can it be wrong? Don’t worry about the trad police. They have been wrong many times.

That's good news to me, I recently bought some tradvanes to use in wet weather and was wondering if they would work. I wonder if they get stiff in cold weather?

From: pdk25
Date: 30-Nov-22

Good luck. I have heard that they don't do so well if hot climates, but I can't verify that.

From: Bigdog 21

It's all good. I'm still waiting to see fake snake skins on self bow. Over on primitive site guys talk about using carbon arrows and plastic nocks. There choice but on a primitive archery site ?

All I shoot outta my longbows and recurves is trad vanes and I live in South Carolina. They do perfectly fine in the heat.

Thumper that’s funny for crying out loud !

I invented a wheel today. oh yeah, not archery related.

From: Rick Barbee

Longbows are actually easier to shoot vanes on, than just about any other bow.

It's as if they were designed with vanes in mind. :-)

Shoot whatever you want and quit letting the so called "trad police" live in your head. Nobody cares what anyone else does.

They need more colors.

In the 70s I shoot alot of 5" vanes, and a bear weather rest.the old person signature had a big flat shelf. A rest was just easyer and allowed vanes.

I watched Bill Matlock shoot vanes off my Pete George ASL bow 15+ years ago now. No big deal for him, just raised the nock point a little. Oh, one of my shooting companions uses nothing but the trad vanes. No issues in out 100+ degree heat.

From: M60gunner
Date: 01-Dec-22

Besides it is no weirder than shooting an ASL bow 3 under. Of course Howard is turning over in his grave.

THE HORROR!! WHY??WHY!!!

In a pinch once, I used acrylic yarn to fletch an arrow - I was able to shoot it out to 20 yards.

Archery is archery - shoot what works for you.

From: boatbuilder

I shot 3 under now with my Hill bows, finger issues forced it after 55+ split and yes I played with trad vanes (what ever that means) and yes they fly well. I didn't keep them on because I only had 5 so they one thing I hate is mismatched arrows besides my wifes hair spray works great on feathers and before that I used my moms, pisses them off when they are out because I built new arrows that need some.

How many Trad archers does it take to change a light bulb? Seven. One to change the bulb and six to complain that Howard and Fred would not do it that way.?????? bvd

I always put a vaned arrow in the quiver and called it my "rain arrow". This was in the early 70s.

From: George D. Stout

Any of you guys or gals remember Tofco Thin-O-fletch? I used them in the early 70's shooting field rounds with my recurve bow. They had adhesive backed bases (like fletch tape) and you could put them on without a fletcher. They worked fine until you shot a hole in one of the vanes. LOL Shoot what the heck you like.

"Trad vanes"...what a joke

From: Buckhunter
Date: 01-Dec-22

I always wanted to use vanes. They make less noise then feathers. Vanes are water proof. What more could you want. If people want to use feathers on cedar arrows, or shoot a recurve and long bow, that's there prerogative. This is still America. Do what makes you happy. I have vanes on two arrows. They are fly grate. They are blazer vanes, 2". I can shoot broad heads with them. I have them straight fletched. That's all I have to say. God Bless.

Hi Steve! Glad to see that you are still on here. Hope you are doing well. My knees gave out and I can' walk on my own anymore. I don't post much anymore but I check in everyday. Take care, Earl.

Well at least he is using wood. Save the heritage shoot some wood.

I live and hunt in some of the wettest conditions in North America. I’ll admit that the farm turkey feathers available on the market just don’t hold up in nasty conditions. That’s why I use wild turkey feathers. Night and day difference with water beading right off of them. They also hold up better than vanes in extreme cold. A buddy of mine shoots these ugly “trad” vanes and when shooting together in the winter, his vanes were becoming brittle and breaking. They were new as of that year as well.

I want to confess that I to have sinned... I have a Bear Weather rest on a longbow (Black Hunter) and it shoots lights out!

V Hunter, A Conan Doyle wrote about goose feathers the same way, wild better than tame, in the "White Company". bvd

From: Yewbender

NOOOOOOOOO, they don’t belong on wood arrows period! They belong on them other arrow materials….LOL…if you like’m and they work have at it.

BTW, all i shoot are woodies with feathers. I have shot plenty of times with them at 3D shoots and never had a problem with them wet.

Canadian gray goose feathers or snow goose feathers= natural trad vanes. Just look at the oil line. But the archery industry always comes out with some plastic gizmo. But I am not offended. Hill bows suck anyways and under 60# they are not even debatable...

From: longbowguy
Date: 06-Dec-22

With some bow and arrow combinations and good tune, arrows with plastic vanes may fly well. With some they don't. Vanes are heavier that feathers so arrows will be a bit slower at close range. Out about 40 yards and beyond the slicker vanes catch up and stay faster beyond.

I always use feather fletching for arrows intended for light bows as for females, elders and youths. They are more forgiving of poor tune and are better for short ranges. They also have a nostalgic appeal in our ancient sport. - lbg

I will start with I love feathers. But forgive me I played with tradvanes this year and killed an antelope and bull elk with them, wish I had them available when I was hunting the coast range of Oregon. They are quieter than feathers and don't seem to drop speed as quickly at distance. Think I will shoot the plastic flamingos in my neighborhood and harvest my own vanes that should make it more trad.

From: grouchy 62
Date: 07-Dec-22

Here on the Oregon coast Plastic vanes on an elevated rest are better because they are not affected by rain. There are different methods to keep feathers dry but they don't work with continuous daily rain.

From: MarkL
Date: 07-Dec-22

RogueElk, that was funny!

From: George D. Stout

I shot vanes off of recurves decades before there was such a thing as "trad vanes". Fact is any vane will work just fine. Watch some slow-mo of arrows coming off a bow, well, properly spined arrows coming off a bow. The vanes are nowhere near the arrow shelf/rest.
