I mostly just glue in a reinforcement.I use bone, wood .Perspex or various plastics. The white one I cut about 30 years ago It has a glass bead glued in as an indicator.Note it was not reinforced and has a split developing.(lazy me) one is made of Australian red box wood and is a male to female fit to the shaft.Held with epoxy .Show us yours please

I have just done self nocks wrapped to re enforce. I was able to make them snap on, with a drill through at the bottom then slotted out. I am ready to try hardwood re enforced. Purple heart, wenge, & Walnut on hand. >>>----> Ken

I started my first knock in Ebony salvaged from old piano keys.It still needs the groove cut in it.I lost my home made centering drill jig .This took 40 minutes to make a new one unfortunately .The Ebony is fairly tough to dress down to be flush with my Baltic pine shaft.I can get 2 knocks out of one black piano key.I only got another 24 to go

Here is my centering drill jig.A bit Primative .First I have a steel tube that neatly fits on the end of my11/32" shaft. This has a centre punch mark in the middle .When slid onto the shaft it sits on the centre punch mark .I them took A 3/16" drill bit and drilled through a wood block.Once that was done I whittled the bolck down close to my required dimension. Now to get it to be true I placed it back in the drill.Once in place I taped the block to the drill chuck and filed and sanded it to the true diameter Once that is done I slip on the tube and drill out the end of my shaft. It drills out a fairly concentric hole.I turn the knocks in a drill too.

I play around with self nocks. I turn some oak on a mini lathe for bamboo use. Also turn some out using antler materials. I also like to foot my self nocks for looks and durability.

This is looking good There is some talented craftsmen out there.I my self don't use a lathe ,I just chuck my small pieces of wood in an electric drill and shape my plugs with a file and sand paper.John and Jim love your work.I envy your eye for detail. You have steady hands and good eyesight. Those two things I struggle with .I tend use shorter pins on my plugs but I am not getting much to play with using piano keys as so try to get 2 plugs per key.Keep it up guys I am loving it. Cheers Osr

Riverwolf it is a very small metal lathe. It measures about 12" wide and 18" long. Belongs to my buddy.

When I was a kid, I received a log of knocks, but not of the archery kind. I don't have the talent to make my own nocks, nor the getup and go. :)

OSR, Jon, Bodymanbowyer I would put those in my quiver over any plastic. >>>----> Ken

Hey folks don't look too close cause they ain't perfect. When I was younger the knocks I cut and shaped were just about perfect but not these days.Arthritis and only 1 good eye makes it twice as hard as it used to be.I get very frustrated. It means a lot to me still being able to do this sort of work.I don't like this gettin old shit cause I never signed up for that one.Any way whilst I am still doing it I convince myself I am winning.Thank you for the kind words .It Cheers me up no end. Osr144, bodymanbowyer, Jon Stewart, Jim Davis, nice self and reenforced nocks. I made some in the past (picture of mine on my first post), so I know a lot of work goes into making some nice ones.

River cane

I’m curious. I always wrap shaft with sinew. Do you guys wrap with anything?

Richard Head in the UK acquired a very old arrow found in a thatched roof.this arrows knock was reinforced with a raw hide strip inserted into the throat of the groove and folded down the side of the shaft .This was bound in place with Linnen thread.Very unique to say the least. Here is my rough sketch of it.

I've had really good luck reinforcing my bamboo shaft with Osage. And make my cut with a cut off wheel. Then I grind some Osage laminations to fit snug epoxy those in then cut and sand my nock groove. JF

BJ, I have in the past but not often. I see your bamboo is hollow. Some say it is necessary but I put about a 1 1/2 inch long bamboo skewer stick in mine using titebond to reinforce the bamboo. Just food thought for thought.

From: Bjrogg

I guess I have always wrapped my self notches with sinew to keep arrows from splitting. I wrap point end to. I have shoot them many thousands of times this way and never had a problem. I was originally a little concerned about the hollow River cane, but it seems to hold up fine.

Alway interesting seeing how everyone does stuff. The same yet different. Some really nice notches.

Just made Turkish style. Two piece knocks One also has a ivory spline inserted before glueing on the bone ears. The other is just a two eared knock fashioned from ebony.I strayed away from tradition and used poly cotton instead of sinew.I also cut a recess in the knock and shaft to accommodate the poly cotton and keep it flush. The thread was filled with CA glue and blended in with the true circumference of the finished shaft.I only fletched partially onto the thread as I currently can not shoot Mongolian thumb draw (arthritis)I now have more area for mediterian draw. They are time consuming to build as was the whole arrow.Ya just got to appreciate the craftsmen from the Ottoman Empire they sure know how to make complex arrows.Hard to reproduce well. Great nocks guys! Really exceptional work. And hats off to you OSR... piano keys! I know from posts long ago how you repurpose old doors and whatever into quality shafts...that and other materials that you collect and bring life to. The only self nocks I ever did were with cane. I drilled out the center pith and footed them with either bamboo or wood skewers. Been a long time since I've done any. Here's 6 of many cane arrows I made. Wrapped with artificial sinew.
