I know this will vary by hand size, but what do you like the throat of the grip to be around? What circumference range works well for you? Talking R/D longbows if you want that specific. How much thought or importance do you place on it?

That is a big part of the "fit" thing so it has different degree's of importance to different folks.

For me personally it is pretty important. Just as an example I have been messing with an old Savage Deathmaster and the circumference is 5.25" and it fits me really well. Would a bow not being exactly that circumference be a deal breaker....I doubt it.

I like to be able to loosely wrap my fingers around the bow so my thumb and forefinger can connect, but not grip. I don't have a big deal with some that are slightly bigger or smaller, you know when you pick it up if you've shot any length of time.

Throat circumference doesn't make much difference to me. It's the relationship between the heel and throat that's more important for me. A high heel/wrist pushes my hand up into the throat under the rest more than i want it to. I prefer a low heel/wrist, even better if it's paired with a throat on the large size.

I like a skinny throat. I like my thumb to overlap my trigger finger. That’s on recurve bows. My R/D LB’s have a fairly slim riser with a slight locator grip. I tend to “get ahold of it”. My thumb just touches my trigger finger. I had a Black Widow with a “fat” grip. Really never could get that comfortable with it.

I had my latest longbow made with the grip I specified. It’s 5 1/8 circumference.

Personally I like it to be as narrow as possible in a recurve and it is something I really look for in a new bow. My wife (Deni) likes a wide thick grip and she has a small hand so I guess it is personal preference.

Thanks for the replies. I have 2 bows, one at 5”, one 5 1/4. I think right between them would be perfect at 5 1/8”, like dnovo mentioned they like. I’m surprised I can tell that little bit of difference. Just was curious, thanks again all!

I have not actually measured my bows for grip throat diameter, but they feel kinda on the skinny side to me(2xl glove size here). The last bow grip that I truly recall LOVING was, actually, a compound metal riser bow called Nemesis, by Xi Archery back in 1995. I could shoot one inch groups all day with that bow, and it had a VERY meaty grip.
