A friend of mine bought a black hunter recurve earlier this year. At my suggestion he purchased a new d97 string for it from the string builder I deal with.

Yesterday before we were set to go out turkey hunting his string broke on him right on the string loops. I’m assuming there is something sharp in limb tips he needs to file down. I’ve never had this happen to me.

Could be a spot on the limb edge that rubs the loop as it is removed from the tip, or a string holder that keeps the string tense when it is let down.

Roll up a piece of sandpaper and smooth it up. Then put a little clear finish over it.

I've seen than more than bow, and most of them considerably more expensive than that one.

Quick and easy fix with a chain saw file and some rolled sandpaper like fdp mentioned. Honestly, people should check the notches on any bow when they buy one, new or used.

A company that turns out hundreds of that bow every few days, is likely to have a few that aren't perfect in the string nock area. I've seen customs as well with jagged or asymmetrical string cuts.

First thing I do with a new to me bow is what Frank and George suggested. Tip inspection and clean them up as they described…

I also always unstring my bows after use so I can inspect the string for wear the next time I use them, especially the where the arrow is nocked.

Doesn't look right at the neck area of the nock.

Do as suggested, however also make sure the laminations are not separating. if so a little of the very thin super glues will fix that.

Ok thanks for the advice. What a helpful bunch here on leatherwall!

Looks like it's frayed even past the loop, kinda looks like that string had previously had issues.

I have ordered many Chinese bows to play around with and most all were very well built. But they ALL required final fitting and finishing! I now view Chinese bows, regardless of quality level, as Bow Blanks. After final fitting , sanding, finishing they are excellent value. I have even had to retiller some of them.

Looks like string to me. Grove looks off because of missing part of string.

Absolutely. Slick up grooves and limb corners. >>>----> Ken

Its what you get for $100. Fix it with some sandpaper, and still consider it one hell of a deal. You cannot buy the materials to build a bow, for what they sell them. And thats not counting the cost to build a hot box, forms, bandsaw, belt sander, and all the other tools.

Send it back.
