I posted up the build of this bow a few months back. I wanted to do a follow up now that I’ve had a chance to shoot it a bit and decide what I think of it. Check out the video and let me know what you think.
Thanks guys. It does have a bit of zip to it. I played with some different arrow weights from that and my glass bows this winter, when I wasn't liking my trajectory. I found that those heavier arrows are a little easier to aim. I think that setup was around %20 foc and made aim in relation to point on a little easier.
Damon: no I didn't realize there was one. I'd try to make it work, but I bought the guaranteed hunt period for turkeys which is most of the month of May. I'm gonna be bumming and living out of my truck again trying to find birds to go after. There's more birds here every year, but I think I'll have to put on a ton of miles to find birds on public. I was pretty tired by the time deer season was over, but two weeks after it was done I was ready to hunt again. I keep talking about going down to Compton since my dad lives close to St. Joe, but I think he's coming up here to fish that weekend.
Hey Cash, that's the same tag I buy every year. Gives me more flexibility to get out after them. Keep in mind the tag's good for the Northern Lower on public and the Southern half on private. If you change your mind, I have spots on both along the West side. Lots of birds around, I just suck at killing 'em!
twostrings: thanks! Damon: I thought the same thing. We usually get an April snowstorm or so, that I figured would put the damper on things. It'd be fun to get down there and hunt them at some point. When I bought my tag they made me declare my unit, so it says M. Works out though cuz I can hunt the am scout deer then hunt til shooting hours close. Do you go after them with your stickbow? I bought a string tracker from omnivore but I'm still a little apprehensive. I've heard if you don't hit them perfect they're tough to recover. But hey the only way to get good at killing with a stickbow is kill a lot of stuff with a stickbow. I went through a period where I killed a pile of deer with compound and got real efficient, then got sloppy with a gun, now I got deadly again with that, and I feel like I just don't have that hyper aware confident feeling that I do with the gun.
Yes sir, strictly sticks. I'd have killed a pile by now with a scatter-gun, lol. I have one spot on private that's loaded every year, but last year was my first time there and they seemed to shy away from calling and decoys. I plan to set up in the most used walk way they seem to like and stay quiet and hopefully get a shot off as they wander by. That's my afternoon close to home spot, I'd much rather go after them in the woods by camp, which I'll do on the weekends.
This string is not tracking true on that recurve end or is that just an optical illusion? It appears that the nocks are not symmetrical??? Visible clearly at 04:06.
Cash, I bought a blind last season for the private spot, but at camp I use a leafy suit or just regular camo and try to use pre- built brush blinds or blend into the shadows. I have a blast doing that on those days when they're gobbling their heads off. I'll yelp (that's about all I know how to do so far) at em and often enough they'll gobble and start towards me or wander off depending on whatever goes through their walnut brains. I can shoot my longest bows kneeling or sitting in my chair from the blind I got. It's a Barronett Big Cat and I got it for when my son comes with and the property is only 10 acres so not a lot of room to roam anyway.
On the overthinking the bow, it's just what I want to use. A gun without a blind is tough enough. I'm just a sucker for punishment I guess :)
I need to find a hobby where I don’t punish myself. Lol. I should just put my big boy pants on and use the bow. I was thinking ghillie and kneel/stand behind a tree between me and a jake deke. I’m gonna take a cruise on Sunday and check a few spots.
