My buddy made me a really nice self bow this year and I took a beautiful buck this week with it. My buddy offered to help me make my own and I have access to the Clay Hayes online workshop. I just need to find a good place to buy a quality stave. Who do you guys order from?

Well, it is not that easy. Nobody is in the business, much. So you have to look around and see who has come across a good supply lately that he is offering to share. It can be disappointing as when a farmer clears a patch of osage and cuts it all to stove length. Or it may lay on the ground and the beetles spoil it all. A really clear straight stave is a wonderful thing to find.
In the meantime you could practice on hickory, pecan, hornbeam or locust. - lbg

Bowyerstavestore.com He's not cheap but I got a beautiful hickory stave from there. He has Osage too. eBay is ok but you have to know what you're looking at. Good luck

Thanks everyone. My buddy is looking too. He has a place near him that does workshops and gets them by the truckload, but he doesn’t know if they’ll sell him a stave. I’ll look at Pine Hollow and bowyerstavestore. I know eBay has them but I don’t have enough experience to know what I’m looking at from a few pictures. I’m hoping to make something this year with good guidance that I can use to take a deer next season. I make trade points but my knapping isn’t quite up to par yet, but who knows by next season.

There used to be a bunch of people cutting osage and selling staves, one guy I know was in it full time for many years and sold over 30,000 staves. Like my friend this kind of work (drawknifing) takes a heavy toll you your arms, shoulders and hands, most of the people who sold a lot of staves dropped out for this reason.

This is about 1/3 of the staves my friend Mike put out the last time I was at Twin Oaks. He stripped the bark and sapwood off of almost everything he sold, last time I talked to him he had trouble sleeping at night because his hands stayed numb and his shoulders were always burning from working so much osage. His stave prices ranged from $10 for a rough narrow stave to $100 for a pristine snaky stave with perfect rings.

Stripped enough green sapwood that it was ankle to knee deep under me. A good stave always has sap wood off and glued back and ends. Bark on staves are hit and miss even if it was a good stave.

Greg, if you're on FB there's a couple groups with guys that post staves for sale pretty regularly. I haven't tried any, but probably would if I had to. Just another option.
