While attending the Compton traditional bow shoot this past summer, I came across the Hummingbird Archery booth manned by my friend Linda Graham. Her husband Ben passed away from cancer a few years ago. She was displaying bows being made under the Hummingbird brand by James Parker in partnership with Linda. A left hand longbow on the table immediately caught my eye. Linda told me that Ben had built the bow for himself as a backup as he had injured his right hand before hunting season a few years back and thought he might need to shoot left handed that hunting season. I took the bow out on the 3D course for a test drive and was soon taking the bow home with me.

I began shooting the bow off and on during the summer and felt a strong connection to it. A few weeks ago I decided it would be my primary bow for an upcoming moose hunt with outfitter Ryk Visscher near Edmonton, Alberta. Day one was uneventful with two cow moose and one calf seen. Day 2, we set up for our afternoon sit at the edge of a small meadow. After sitting several hours I noticed a very large bull standing on a nearby hillside. The moose came my way. At a distance of about 17 yards I drew my bow and shot. The stricken moose ran about 50 yards and stopped trying to figure out what happened. Seconds later the heart-shot moose staggered and crashed to the ground. Ryk and the guides back at camp were very excited when they saw the bull. After a quick green score Ryk said it was the largest moose that any Bowhunter had taken from his camp. If the score holds, it will rank about 20th for all-time moose bow kills in Alberta.

Thanks Ben…we did good!

Congrats again John! That Bull will be #2 in our Trad records. The #1 Bull in both Trad and all time bow was also taken with Trad gear.

The area that John hunted has one of the highest (if not the highest) Moose densities in Alberta.

That sir, is a lot of bull. Congratulations on your moose and choice of bows.

Ben, Linda, and James are all tributes to North Carolina, and traditional archery. I had one Hummingbird bow that was only average, all of the others were exceptional.
