On a whim, I decided to look for the Bear recurve a work colleague, Al Peterman, gave me many years ago. Al was about 20-25 years older than I, and was a stogie chomping insurance claims professional, who lived in the same town as me, and, on occasion would kindly give me a ride into the office when my car was being serviced etc. Any way, I took out the bow from its Asbel wool bow sock to get reacquainted, and it's a Grayling MI Bear Kodiak Magnum, 52", 45#'s, RH in very good condition, with a flemish twist string. I strung it up, and decided to shoot my Legacy 1916 arrows to see how she did.
WOW!! Was I pleasantly surprised what a great shooter it is!!! After many years of being idle, and with no brace height/string twist adjustment, it shot my arrows like rockets, with me getting very tight groups right away! I was blown away and giggling!
I want to silence the string with a yarn "ball", so what do you suggest is the best way to do that: in between the bundles?, or around the whole string? Also I want to install a replacement medallion, but there is residual old dried adhesive in the hole. Do I need to remove that, or will fresh epoxy adhere to it OK? If I need to remove, how do you suggest I do that, as the hole is recessed? Should I use just my NPV Arrow Mate glue?
Thanks to all who provide me some help and input.
Stay well and healthy, and shoot 'em straight >>>---->

Serial number is 6M6698
Can any of you Bear experts tell me its value, and if it's rare, or special in some way?
Thanks.

1966....don't slow it down with wads of yarn! Meager catwhiskers are sufficient. I rarely use anything on the string.

My old Kodiak HUnters are not too nice with nothing on the string, but with my yarn puffs, like a whole different bow. Much more quite, no vibration on the release, very nice to shoot. I make my own puffs ( I should say my sister makes them for me, sews the yarn pcs to a stip that I tie on the string) I like to slip the strip through the string and tie it, then I wrap it around the string and do the same to tie the other end. You would have to just tie them onto the string, which would do the job too.
Not sure on the coin, but I would scrape any rough glue away, then glue the new one in.

The usual way to remove an original Bear coin medallion is to heat up the head of a large bolt then apply that hot bolt head to the medallion, being carful not to touch it against the surrounding wood. After about 30 seconds, enough heat should have transferred from the bolt head to the medallion and from the medallion to the glue beneath it to soften the glue and then you can slip the tip of a eyeglass screwdriver or similar into the space around the medallion and pry it up without resistance. But if the coin is in place, why do you want to remove it?
I found brace height to be most important to quieting a K MAg ( 8-8.125") and some yarn or rubber spiders will make it even quieter.
Your K Mag appears to be in good condition and that vintage with no holes, gouges or cracks and proper coin in place, mid-40's draw weight is bringing in 210-260 on eBay these days.

A little hot melt applied to that heated up bolt then quickly stuck to a medalion will pull it right out before it completely cools.

Mangonboat, the original medallion is gone, so I have a new replacement from 3R. Just wanted to know how to remove the old glue residue from the "hole", and best adhesive to install the new medallion. Your hot bolt idea may be the answer, but would like to know if you have another way. Thanks for the other info as well.

It’s not rare and it’s special because a good friend gave it to you ;) Tie on some cat whiskers or look up the paracord silencers and it will be whisper quiet. Enjoy your bow!

Update: I replaced the medallion by sanding the old glue residue and then using Gorilla Super Glue for adhesion.
I will be installing paracord silencers when my 550 cord order arrives.
Thanks for all your inputs.

I traded a lefty 45# Grizzly for a lefty 1967 KMAG, 45#, with a LWer several years ago. That '67 was more fun than a new puppy. I eventually traded it to somebody else but I've had several K Mags and that 1967 was the best shooter of the bunch.
