I have made snakey osage selfbows but I haven't recurved 1 or sinew backed 1 to try and get more draw weight. Should I recurve the tips first or sinew back it first?

You would have to recurve the limbs first because the heat would likely mess up your sinew otherwise...

Yup, I've only sinewed long bows, but the heat bending of the tips would have to be done before the sinew I would think. I know that's the way I'd try it.

Yep....recurve it first.

More draw weight doesn't come from sinew or recurved tips. It comes from the amount of wood you leave behind. You can build an 80# self bow or an 80# sinew backed bow.

If you are interested in building a sinew backed static I did a full blown build along on Primitive Archer many years ago. Its archived in the "how to's and build alongs" section. I have slightly refined some things since then, but nothing that truly matters. Its hackberry and sinew, but the wood species makes no difference in regard to the process you should follow.

I'm thinking of cutting 2" off each end and putting 3 layers of sinew on it and I saw a video where the guy strung his bow backwards and then sinew it and let it dry. Any thoughts on this?

Listen to what pearldrums and others that build selfbows. JF
