Four of the contestants grabbed a Galaxy Black Hunter bow and arrows for their weapon.

Is this something like alone?

I dunno. Most of the folks who get on these types of programs aren't archers/bowhunters. They take a bow with them, but you seldom see them use it, or hardly even carry it. The fact that they're choosing cheap imported bows (though quality is good enough) is just an indication of their newbiness/unfamiliarity with archery.

Using cheap imported bows keep the cost of the show down. bvd

I love my "cheap, imported bows". I've been in this archery obsession for over 60 years. I have owned more high dollar customs bows than I could count, and still have a few. So, does this expose my newbiness/unfamiliarity with archery? I thought I was pretty well versed in it.

David. I have a couple of Black Hunters as well. I mostly use them for instruction. Yep. They're a decent bow, and folks have been at this a while also own them. But they're also an introductory bow for most people, and their ubiquity and low price accounts for their large market share among newbies.

I should add, in my first post, i wasn't critiquing the bow as much as I was the participants of these types of programs. Most of them aren't very skilled. But particularly since Clay Hayes killed a deer and more recently another fella killed a moose with bows, which enabled them to win their respective appearances on Alone, these newer participants in similar programs figure they should carry a bow as well.

But since most are neither hunters nor archers, it seems they just pick what is most available without giving it a lot of thought. And, if they're not proficient in using a bow, it's a useless, even negative choice for their endeavor.

Remember the Baird brothers on Alone a few years ago. They had a bow between them (not a Black Hunter), but they never used it. At least it's use never showed up in the program. They won because they did have some woodmanshnip skills, and they are just damn tough hombres.

Something Like Alone. Earl, I bet you have never looked at or shot a Black Hunter. Your loss.

I have never looked at or shot a Black Hunter. At 79 I don't feel the need to do so. bvd

I have 3 Black Hunters hanging in the basement. Good shooting bow. Maybe they grabbed them because they are takedowns and easy to transport.??? Just a thought.

You are probably right Ricky.

I think that is the show that the family member back home can choose to pull them out at their discretion. My wife said that we would definitely win if it was her decision for me to come home or not. I’m not sure how I feel about that.

They picked the Black Hunter because they didn’t want to wait 6 months to a year or more for a custom bow. :-)

Brant... hahaha, I feel your pain:)

Well, the cost of a Galaxy might not go up much, but the boots I was looking at last week just went up about 60 bucks…. Over 20%.

I have one Galaxy downstairs and a 1-piece that was about $140 from Lancaster. They’re fine. And frankly, if I were going to try something like these shows, I’d probably go with a cheap takedown because (less critically) it’s no big loss if it doesn’t survive the trip, and (much more importantly) I would probably want something at least #10 lighter than I normally shoot, because once you start losing muscle mass, it’s awfully easy to find yourself overbowed…

But I wouldn’t last 2 weeks. I don’t carry enough fat, and if I could limit my losses to a pound a day, I’d be emaciated by then.

These shows would be a lot more interesting if they required contestants to go out at the same weight that they were when they began the selection process.

My wife and Brant's wife must be sisters. I'm unstoppable if a dead guy can be declared the winner and the spouse still collect!
