I went to a local traditional indoor 3D shoot last night, first one in about ten years. WOW this one was different, there were shots out to 50 yards! The ones I'd been to before had max yardage of about 20 yards. Needless to say my 47lb ASL with 550 gr arrows had a lot of drop from 30 yards and more. It was a fun shoot with only about 35 shooters but I did get to see and talk with some old time shooting buddies that I haven't seen in a while. One of the things I didn't like other than the long yardage was not very many backstops even on smaller targets rabbit and a crow. The crow was at about 27 yds and nothing but the floor to stop arrow if you miss. It was still a nice get together and I'm sure they got a few sujestions about their setup from the other shooters. :)

What’s wrong with some distance??

Sounds like a grand old time to me!

I am disappointed when 3d shoots don't let us sling some far shots. I don't get to shoot at 40 often and slinging at a moose at 40 IS FUN!

If I'm shooting bullseye targets, distance doesn't really matter so much, but if I'm at a 3d I expect to shoot targets at accepted hunting distances. Indoor shoots are not typically designed for stick shooters.

I don’t care for indoor 3-d,I find them noisy, crowded and the whole thing hectic and rushed.

I like any kind of shoot & appreciate the folks that put them on. Don't believe I have ever griped about the conditions or distances. At least I hope not. Maybe some suggestions or even better some help would be appreciated. Griping never is. Never been lucky enough to see an indoor shoot that had room for 50 yard targets. If there was one I would prepare for it.

Matt, nothing wrong with distance. I am curious do you take shots that long without knowing the distance & no backstops? Even at unmarked distances you become somewhat familiar with a course you shoot all the time. Estimating distance indoors is very different too.

If I have my point on rig set for 20 yards, I never felt obligated to take the longer shots un prepared. Exactly the same as if I were hunting. >>>----> Ken

I dunno. A 27 yard shot at a crow, with no backstop. I know no one on this site would miss, but I've been around enough to know that most trad shooters would miss a target like that. Then the arrow goes careening into the back wall another 20 yards away. Enough targets like that, and folks don't come back. I think shooter suggestions are in order.

I have shot at a range like that that is 14 miles from my house. Nice targets out to 40 yds, and a lot of fun to shoot, but before we went to shoot it we practiced ,and practiced out to 40 yds. in 5 yd increments. That helped. My friend was shooting a 55 lb Martin, and I shot a 45lb Osage self bow. He turned in a better score, but I had as much fun. Maybe more. It is set up for compound bows with pins ,and peep sights.

Were there backstops on any of the shots?

I think there were backstops on 4 or 5 of the targets. I'm not really griping, more like I was surprised at the distance indoors and lack of backstops on most of the targets. By the way, the 27 yard crow shot was from the balcony so it was an elivated long shot at a fairly small target. any wiss was right into the concrete floor. This is a newer archery range and only their third or fourth shoot. I'm sure some of these issues will be worked out in the future. By the way, I did hit the crow. ;)

I’m not a fan of indoor 3D shoots. I’d rather walk through the woods and fields from target to target.

Brave sponsors is all I can say! I shot in a few about 35+ years ago when they first became popular in my "neck of the woods". But they were in an abandoned chicken house and shots were all under 25 yds. with haybale backstops. I'd guess the structure still sustained plenty of "impacts", but I'm happy to say no poultry was harmed during these 3D shoots! An interesting observation was near-unanimous agreement among participants that average scores went down due to being inside negatively affecting everyone's distance estimation ability. I'd have thought the opposite since the variance was probably no more than +/- 5-8 yds the whole round.

Sorry, but if a club is setting an indoor 3-D with a crow at 27 yds from an elevated position with no backstop and a concrete floor....I'm getting my money back.

Brings back fond memories of the big 3-day, weekend shoots that allowed camping and had "coon" shoots after dark. A whole new crop of "instinctive" shooters would always come off the range declaring "that had to be the only explanation they could hit a coon target with only a flashlight held by the spotter"! I'd tell them to go back and shoot another round without the flashlight and if they hit them all I'd agree, lol!

Indoor 3-D closest to me has shots to 35 yards. Past my 'comfort zone' tbh.

I have been shooting Indoor 3D Every Monday night with a group of friends since 2008 with a maximum of 20 yards (except for big holidays and bad weather). Some of us have been shooting lately on the last Friday of the month at Bluff City Outdoors in Alton Illinois, 25 yards maximum. We get a lot of good Hunting practice. Kurt

It's indoor. The arrow has to stop sometime. Relax, it's only a game.

I used to go to one that was in an indoor hockey area they had targets beyond 60 yard . Everything was too far even for a lot of compound shooters. I stepped it off one year and the average shot was 34 yards that included all the small targets . There was a bucket at the door that was full of broken arrows . They eventually quit having the shoot cause no one showed up .

It sounds like a great time to me especially the longer shots. I wish there was something like that near where i live.
