Fairly new to building wood arrows. I am curious what dyes or stains anyone uses? I have no problems using natural oil wood stains to get beautiful arrows. But I'd like to make all yellow, blue, orange, different color arrows and I'm not having much success.
Any tips on how many dips it takes, or what kind of leather dye is used or paint?

Go to a hardwearstore plenty of colors of wood stain to choose from. And you can also use water base paint and cut it with water (you can make it as thin as you want) and the colors are endless. Good luck and let us know how you did.

The ones on the left are an orange water based stain ( I believe Minwax) the middle greenish color and the yellow on the far right are all stains from Lost nation. Those are my favorite stains. The new water based stuff can be tinted to most colors at Ace Hardware. They do take 2-3 coats for a nice color.

Several years ago I bought a big bag of walnut hulls that are organic and mix well with water. That, and an Osage yellow water stain have pretty well replaced all the other dyes and stains, unless I get a wild hair to do something a bit different from time to time. Easy application and color density can be determined by adding more dye/hulls for a one coat application. Give them a few days to dry well. I don’t have to sand them with POC or Doug fir after staining and before dipping with multi coats of gasket lacquer.

To get bright color prime the shaft with thinned white water color. Let dry thoroughly. Thin water color from tube in the shade of your choice and quickly cover the white primered arrows. You will get very bright color.

You can get just about any color of rit dye you can think of and thin it with the alcohol to the shade you like and it’s pretty cheap if that’s still a thing

Do a search for analine dyes. They are available from wood working supply vendors and come in many colors. Mix them with denatured alcohol and they will work well.

I've used minwax stain and Fiebings leather die with success. I've also used RIT dye with denatured alcohol with success for a lot of kids arrows since they have a lot of bright colors.

I use water based acrylic from wally's or hobby lobby or any hobby supplier. They can be cut with water to be more of a stain or used as is for complete coverage. I top off with water base wipe on poly.

I really liked the stains I bought from Lost Nation but was really surprised when I dipped them into the True North clear coat and they instantly bled into the mix and essentially ruined it. I thought they were water based but I guess not. For those of you that have had success with the Lost Nation stains, but clear coat do you use?

Wipe on Poly, Birchwood Casey True Oil, also wipe on. Make sure you let the stain dry 24 hrs. Always test it before dipping.

I use leather dye for the cap and minmax dye for the shaft.
Walnut hulls make a deep colored dye, with all dyes, just keep putting on coats until you get the color you like.
This is a walnut husk dyed shaft. I use cheap acrylic craft paint for cresting, it is compatible with any finish. A 99 cent bottle will llast you a lifetime.

Most any stains will work. I found some forest green paste type stain that comes out of a tube (like toothpaste) and applied it on the crest area of the arrow. After it dries I sand the bottom of the crest so it has a fade to it. I then just use wipe on poly (5 coats) for the finish.
