Shot against all compound shooters with my recurve on Monday night. Because of surgeries have not shot at all for months. Did manage a 69 out of a possible 80 for one eight arrow game. Better than I thought I would have done since that included two 35 yard shots. Anyone else shooting indoors this winter against mostly compound guys? They shoot trad bows on Thursday at my club, but the guy running it sets all the 3D animals between the 20 yard line and the wall. Would be great for kids, but kinda silly for expirenced archers don't you think?

I forgot to say on trad bow night some of the shots are like five feet. I just can't make this fun.

There's a range at one of the outfitters around here. Set up for compounders, 20 yds. or so, targets are hard as a rock and it's $10/hr. I just set up in my shop and shoot my target out in the snow, I can get to 20 yards. Usually 25-30 arrows/day. Talked to an old friend yesterday and have a spot 3 minutes from the house to rove and chase rabbits and squirrels. Gave my word no deer. There are some nice big fat reds back there.

There’s a 3D league at the public range run by one of the shops. Unfortunately it doesn’t draw many shooters from what I heard.

For my part, 3d ranges are to be shot at realistic hunting distances. That's the way they were designed.

I don't know what it would be like not shooting with the compound people. In a league we shoot the first 2 shoots for a handicap but that is only for scores. We all must shoot from the 35 yard line and sometimes at very small targets.

I work at Neil's Archery in Endicott, NY. I shoot an animal target league on Tuesday nights against compound with sights shooters. Actually a lot of the compound shooters are intrigued by my recurve without sights. I actually have gotten 2 of our other employees shooting recurves.

Don't really care how they set them, I'll shoot at them. If I miss one who cares. It will help me a better shot. I don't have a problem with compound shooters either. I will say this, I have to pay attention to the person next to me because I cant.

As Jim wrote. I also just shoot the range and never complain about the distances. Next thing you know, you complain and you are helping the field captain with range set up, heaven forbid, lol
Joking aside I was our field captain back in the 80's for a couple years and every once in awhile someone would say something so I would ask them to help the next week.

For sure, shooting with compound guys is eye opening for most of them. They one archer saw my shot land in the eleven ring on the turkey 3D that was 35 yards away. Her was like "that was an eleven"! I know we all understand there was a little luck with that shot, however I was bearing down. Kinda fun.

As far as commenting or complaining on how someone else sets up the 3D course, I have to explain a little. First the guy ignores the trad IBO lanes painted on the floor with numbers in our clubs indoor archery range. They are maybe 25 to approx. 30 yards from the wall, instead he throws numbers printed on cardboard on the floor across the 20 yard line. I had to explain to the guy that having archers shoot from both the far right and far left at the same target at the same time was dangerous as arrows could more easily be struck as they were crossing in the target. He said not likely to happen, my next shot impacted the center of his arrow shaft about two inches from the target and lucky for me went in the 10 ring. I suggested he check his carbon shaft for cracks. The Archery chairman had to talk to the guy about how this was not allowed as someone could get injured. I realize an arrow can be impacted even if shot from the same spot as the first shot, however it is much less likely.

“Do you find 18 meters a challenge?”
For anyone who says “no“, I think we should require that they post a picture of their scorecard…. I’ll bet it’s not as if the compound guys are all tied for First Place every week.
That said, I don’t think I would pay to shoot a 3D course with all of the targets at Participation Trophy distance; there’s still the challenge of shooting a perfect score, but (as small as my house is), I can shoot close to 20 feet here at home without alarming the neighbors…

18 meters max. So 5,7 10 yard shots? I don't find those very challenging. A 15 yard head shot on a live squirrel, yes. A 10 ring on a 3D at 5, 10, 15 yards, no.

Corax_latrans, I do not call myself a pro shooter, just a regular trad hunter. That said, last night at Washtenaw sportsmans club in Ypsilanty Mi I shot a 1" target at 20 yards first try with whitnesses, one of which was our archery chairman. Anyone in SE MI that wants to shoot can at Washtenaw Sportsmans club.org. Bring your bow. The 3D leauge is 7pm Mondays. Chuck

The point is, you can always make a shot difficult at ANY range, given a small enough target.
As I said, that wouldn’t appeal to me much, but 20 yards/18 meters is not uncommon as a competitive distance, and hell, even I can nail my first shot from time to time.

Like I said I am not a pro, just a regular Trad hunter. That said I have averaged better than 250 on the 300 target spot during an entire season at my club winter league. I'm sure those that question my proficiency on this post can better that, even if only in their imagination. What do you think?

Nobody is questioning your proficiency. The point is that you can always up the challenge at ANY range just by picking a smaller target. So if you can’t shoot longer, shoot smaller. Make the best/most of what you have access to. Beats complaining about the short range.
