Just wanted to post a short message of praise for the Asbell Wool Pathfinder pullover. I spent the weekend quail hunting and just hiking/exploring the deserts of southern New Mexico with my brother. With the lows near freezing and highs in upper 50’s (high of 70+ on Saturday required no jacket) I walked many miles with only a thin merino wool base layer, a heavier merino wool shirt and my Pathfinder jacket. I love that thing! Get warm - just pull the zipper down all the way and instant ventilation. Zip it back up when chilled.
Only complaint (and it’s not a complaint, because it applies to any wool product I could have worn) was the amount of burs, briars, thorns, and just general debris I accumulated when walking the brush along the river. I spent an hour picking crap out it tonight, and I’m not done. Turns out, the big kangaroo pocket can hold a LOT of woody crap. Lol

I bought the new jacket with collar a few years back, love it. My next purchase will be the Pathfinder.

I have several pieces of Asbell wool. It’s ok, but not for cold windy days near, or below freezing. I layer when I use it. I’m not a wool fan unless it has a wind barrier lining.

Never had any Asbel wool but have an American Sportsman jacket -got years ago before got expensive-I wear that thing all fall and winter when out in the woods sometimes a down vest under when real cold
Best piece of outdoor gear I ever bought
As much as I wear it would be a bargain even at todays prices I occasionally machine wash in cold water and hang over a chair to dry

At one time Asbell carried a wind blocker vest. I picked one up for late season deer hunts. It is too warm to walk around in, but stuffed into a day pack and slipped on under one of their pullovers to sit a pass for an hour or so in teen or single digit temps and wind, it becomes the cat’s meow. I couldn’t do it otherwise.
I’m a big fan of wool, Asbell’s included.

I have worn mine for years. Best camo I have used. I think it is due to the non reflective nature of wool. My regular weight is good to freezing and I have a heavier one for the cold

I have it in heavyweight gray. Blends nicely with the woods here in the NE in winter.

I too have some of her stuff, but it is not for windy days. Then the wind sucks the warmth completely away from you.

I definitely would say that for cold windy days a nice wind barrier under the garment will be needed. I like the Asbell garments, but without a wind barrier under it-it’s doesn’t do much for providing warmth in cold windy conditions.

I bought the hooded vest from the classifieds. It was a little tight so I gave it to my brother. I liked the way the large hood did away with the human outline like a ghillie suit hood. You could also hear good with it because it wasn't tight to the head. I will get a larger one.

Not for really the really cold weather we get up on the prairies of ND and the northern woods of MN. I have other stuff for that.
But what I use it for, it works great! In the earlier parts of October, I stuff it into my back pack and put it on for the last couple of hours on stand.
When things start to get colder, I wear a lightweight down jacket under my Asbell wool, over my regular hunting camo, augmented by long underwear if needed.
It worked well for early spring bear season in Canada too.

For wind protection, purchase Asbell garments big enough that you can wear a puffer jacket underneath. I prefer down from Eddie Bauer or Landsend, with that combo, you'll be amazed how warm you stay with no wind chill in effect!

The fades in the plaid of Asbell's Timber Ghost patterns are really quite wonderful in terms of breaking outlines. I may need to have one for myself someday soon.

Crookedstix—I have two jackets in the Timber Ghost pattern, and it’s as good as any camo pattern out there. I love that pattern. Just get your jacket big enough to layer under it.
