This one made by Tim Dillard. I would say , expert Knapper. My brother and I used to get instuction from him on knapping. Back in the early 90's

Brian , Thanks and if you see an area I need to work on “Please” if you will and don’t mind sharing some of your techniques with me. I only have one “Mentor” who has been a lifesaver and so kind to help me get started on knapping. I have watched so many videos and picking up some techniques others have shared unselfishly and a few books on it. My biggest problem I find is trying not to make a hinge when I try and push a flake . What I’ve been doing is draw a center line all around the blade or head and trying to control just how much pressure it takes to push down and inward to just get to that line or in the general area. Then getting them sharp is another problem along with the notching so which is my hardest area making a cone . So as you can see like many I’m a “Newbie” or an apprentice Soto speak lol… Many thanks to All who help others it’s truly appreciated by me . Keefers

Keefers that’s one more mentor than I had.lol

My technique is mostly flakes of opportunity. I’m definitely not the best knapper on this site. Really good guys are much more methodical than I am.

You are certainly getting better.

As for getting really sharp. I find it’s hardest to get a nice clean flake from a thin edge. It seems contradictory, but to get a good edge dull down the edge you want to sharpen before you try pressure flaking it. Then give it enough pressure to make a nice flake. Before I tried this I crushed my sharpening flakes.

Notches are definitely another step. Getting your base thin really helps. I still struggle with my notches to

Thanks Brian I know it will take lots of time and lots of broken rock before I get the hang of it . Here’s a blade I did a few months ago and was able to reuse the antler handle I had a black obsidian blade in that I showed last week on another post . I was actually trying to touch up that blade cause I didn’t feel it was sharp and I snapped it near the antler handle . Well yesterday I cleaned it up and removed the artificial sinew and had to work on the antler to accept this blade . Not sure what this material is but it was a bugger that seemed to hinge easy as I pressure flaked it . I’m finding out all material doesn’t flake the same and may take a different kind of approach to it. Anyway here it is .

I also wanted to share a new set of couple of copper flaking handles I got from a bread roller in the clearance isle at Hobby Lobby that is made from a wood that is very hard like walnut and appearance like walnut. When I looked up the Janka hardest test it was way over the 2500 psi test . Anyway I got the 12-1/2” long dough or bread roller for $1.99 and had my brother who has a machine shop drill and tap the wood for two set screws so I can replace my worn copper flaking rods . Here’s a few pictures I took when I cut this to get two nice handles that are already tapered and 1-1/8” round at top .

For those who might want one of these and have a Hobby Lobby store near by it’s made of “Acacia” wood which from my research is very hard so you may even use it with a copper cap as a bopper on one end if you desire. The regular cost on their website is only $3.29 if I remember correctly so I may get More at a later date. They seem to cost more at other places but what I liked was it was already tapered at the ends and I got two tools out of one piece . Just sharing this with those who Knap .

Just did a couple more points and had my brother make a plaque with the arrowhead logo for our 2025 Banquet. This will be a silent auction where winning bidder will get the mahogany obsidian knife I knapped ,a stump I haven’t quite decided on yet and the plague. The plague is from curly maple with epoxy finish over the burned logo with the Western and Eastern shore Maryland Traditional bowhunters who come together over the Chesapeake Bay as one brotherhood so to speak. I’ve met some great guys as a member over the years and we share a bond . Anyway I had some donated antler from a few friends and so was the material to Knap as well. I started this journey late in life and I can’t get enough of it and there’s a special man who gave me a few minutes of his time to give me the push I needed to try my hand at knapping. He knows who he is and I know God puts folks in your path of life for a reason . I appreciate his kindness to help mentor me along as well as many folks here on Stickbow as well. Back to the plaque with the logo it can be put on a table ,stand and knife displayed or even has an attachment on the back to hang on a hook on wall if one desires. I’m not sure what it will bring as far as bidding goes but that money goes to the Maryland Traditional Bowhunters for our future members and planned hunts etc. I’m thinking of trying to make a simple sheath for the knife as well but looking at options for possibly another in the future . I have a few small blades I’ll share as well I just completed this week .
