I was looking at a bow and was wondering opinions on carbon backing on the back only not the belly. Louder, different pitch? I talked to several leatherwallers and it has me thinking. Pros and cons of carbon on the back. Any opinions?

The back, back and belly, between…depends on the design.

On the back is optimal, in the middle is pointless, on the belly can be an issue because carbon doesn't like compression.

Yes Carbon on the back is best. But sound is definitely different. I for one after building several longbows. I would just stick to glass. I never really liked the sound of a carbon back and or belly bow, be it a recurve or a longbow. Plus the extra money spent. BMB JF

Carbon on the back is very good. I have another bow with carbon in the lams and that also gives good tortion resistance.

For Me, what I have asl bow with carbon on back absorbs vibrations quickly and is very quiet to my ears.

Unless you're dead set on it I never got much benefit from carbon. If you're making your own be careful not to go overweight.

I found a used bow I would like to try but I can't shoot it first, I would personally rather it not have carbon but the bow has everything else I want. My biggest concern was the noise.

Carbon on the belly & back my Border Covert Hunters, same with a new Black Widow, they are fast but much louder then carbon on the back only of a Storm Eagle. And in between the laminations on both a Habu and on two Silvertip’s. I happen to like the later in between best. Good performance, smooth, and quiet. But that’s my opinion. Joe

I've heard other carbon backed and on belly recurves and longbows, definitely to me a very noticeable sound but fast. BMB

I know a guy who can build one for you. I was a die hard 64"long bow guy until I shot this 58" Appolo 2.

I have a carbon back on my Vintage Works 62 Grayling Classic. IMO it adds to the performance of the bow. I am able to spine up for example. Noise, it likes heavy arrows anything under 10 gpi and it’s noisy. But that could be me and my way of shooting

Are there any quantifiable comparative tests to demonstrate that carbon improves performance in a limb? What are the numbers?
