What years were the Black Maple risers made with the Red Stripe. I am getting one from a Waller here and think I'm really going to like it. It should be a nice additon to my Early Green Stripe. Thanks, Kurt

Kurt, here's my a riser. If memory serves its a 2014. Congratulations on your new bow!

Those red stripes are sharp looking risers.

Thanks Jed, I didn't really need the riser but I did think it looked pretty sharp and I did have an extra set of limbs so i thought why not. Just trying to find out a little history on when they were made. Kurt

That red stripe really stands out, beautiful bow.

Hope that u post a pic of the bow as well. Hard not to get excited about something new, love researching stuff.

The serial number will tell you when it was made. I don't know the range, but I had a couple. They were both 2015

The Black Maple Dymondwood risers came out in 2007 and ran until 2010. From the Bear catalogs for them five years they looked to have had brown accent stripes. The Black Maple Dymondwood risers with the red accent stripe started in 2011 and ran to at least 2017 (properly longer) according to the Bear catalogs I have. I don't have any Bear catalogs beyond 2017 to check past 2017.

Here is a picture of my 2016 Black Maple red stripe Bear Kodiak Takedown.

Correction: The 2015 model says hard rock maple, not dymondwood. 2016 and 2017 may be the same.

Not sure if it's Dymondwood or Maple, but I think it was made in 2012 and it is Black with the Red Stripe. So I guess it's Black Maple Dymondwood.

I believe Dymondwood has a pattern in the wood that looks a bit like contour lines on a topo map. Like on this Super Grizzly.

And the difference between Actionwood and Dymondwood is that one’s called Action and one’s called Dymond??

Wood question— is there a kind of maple that’s actually black, or is it just dyed maple? I’ve never had reason to question that….

My red stripe riser is from 2018, I'm fairly sure. At least I got it from a Waller here who bought it new that Spring. It's a bubinga and phenolic, but those black maple ones are sharp. I'd be hard pressed to pico between one of those a green stripe if they had the same grip.

Actionwood and Dymondwood were both laminated birch made by Rutland with one difference. Dymondwood was laminated birch impregnated with resin and had a reputation for delaminating and cracking but is used by many to make bows, including some well known bowyers. Larry Hatfield said he would never use it based on a sample he had.

After a fire destroyed the Rutland plant in 2015 Bear went back to using Futurewood - a resin impregnated maple. I don't know if they are still using it or not.

If my memory is correct my '87 Silvertip is dymondwood.

Thanks, Phil!

That might well explain why I have seen Dymondwood used in a lot of projects with really vibrant colors… The birch probably takes the stain better.

But that just goes to show you… All laminated woods are not created equal!

My sources (catalogs and books) say Black Maple Dymonwood was used for the Bear bow risers so was Dymondwood made with both maple and birch wood?

From: Nemophilist
Date: 12-Dec-24

I googled it and this is what it said: "Dymondwood is made from Baltic Birch and Maple. It has been cut into thin veneers and dyed. The veneers are pressed together with a resin under tremendous pressure and heat. This makes a very hard and colorful wooden material suitable for making all sorts of projects from."

I guess both woods were used.

Thanks for all your knowledge and investagating Frank and others. I had a Hummingbird Longbow that was Dymondwood and it looked very nice and shot really well. Looking forward to the New to me Bear Red Stripe. Now if I could just find those newer Black and White tip 38# on a "B" number 1 limbs I'd be set. Anybody have a set to trade.
