I've never owned one and never will because of the cost. Why are they so expensive?

From: Mo/Ark
Date: 09-Dec-24

It's a valid question. They are very good knives. I have several, including my EDC knife. All of mine were issued. I couldnt justify the cost for myself. They have a great warranty, and hold an edge very well. But they are more money than I want to spend on a knife for opening amazon boxes.

I have lots of great knifes case ,Buck and several customs but none of them are worth what they want for a benchmade. I looked at one the other day and just don't see the quality they are asking price for.

I have one but only because it's a redbox Benchmade. A very well made knife IMO.<><

Check out the Montana Knife Company if you want real sticker shock ! Plenty of other stuff that’ll do the same thing. Social status l guess, good ol Chevy or Cadillac……

From: ephphatha

I suspect they are expensive because that's what people are willing to pay for them.

There was a Walmart knife that went viral a few months ago. It costs about $10, and it resembles the Benchmade Bugout knife. I got a few of them, and I'm pretty happy with them. The blade is D2 steel and seems to hold a decent edge.

The Walmart knife is an orange Ozark Trail knife.

I have a few of them. very good knifes. you can get a lot of different steel in them.

I was looking at MKC a couple of weeks ago. Who would want a skinning knife with the handle wrapped in para cord. Folks forget about those Mora knives. Very good knives, very good prices.

My wife found one in a parking lot and threw it in the bait cutting box for the boat. I saw it and fished it out, then looked online and saw it new for $300. It’s been used, but I hear benchmade will refurbish it. I’m planning to send it in to get cleaned up then gift it to my neighbor. I like old fashioned carbon steel slipjoint pocket knives. This one is too new fangled and “super-steely” for me.

FWIW I wouldn’t give $300 for it, but someone did.

Good knives but overpriced and overrated in my opinion. Just do some shopping. Some of these knife companies have priced themselves in the realm of custom makers. If you can afford them, fine. Not for me..

My older brother is a Benchmade fan. He's got his work knife and his church knife both Benchmade. Personally I could never come to terms with the butterfly lol . It's buck or homemade for me.

I had a Benchmade once seemed like a good knife.I have hundreds of knives, and been collecting for 50 years. You know i carry a small $14 knife that's not so expensive. But it sharpen's easy and if i lose it no big deal.

I have gotten a few in trade over the years. They just weren’t for me. I have to like the looks and the way the knife feels in my hand. Lately I’ve been really liking the older American made Marbles knives from Gladstone Michigan. Easy to sharpen and gets really sharp:)

From: Mindful
Date: 09-Dec-24

Quality is a rare item these days. When you can find it, it’s not cheep……

The Benchmade company produces quality knives. I have never known an owner of their knives to complain that the knife lacks satisfaction…..

I believe their production knives are reasonably priced for what you get in return.

My everyday carry is a $45 dollar case knife, and my hunting knifes are bucks. I do have some custom knife by makers that I really respect, and they make good knifes. But $300 for a knife I might lose is out of the question.

I have a Bench made Osborne 940. I like it for an EDC, very well made, easy open, easy close. I could sell it for more than I paid for it 10 years ago. Because of the cost I don't use it like my Cold Steel Recon, digging arrows out of trees and such.

I have a Benchmade Bugout that I absolutely love and it splits EDC duty with my Spyderco Dragonfly and Para 3. I see they're up around $190 now which is insane. I think I paid around $90 for mine new 5 years ago or so. I wouldn't spend $190 on one but I think it's definitely worth around the $100 mark.

I have steep country hunter that’s a bad a$$ knife. I bought for 125 bucks which I consider a steal. I once skinned, gutted, disjointed and quartered 4 good sized pigs without sharpening in between. Heck of a knife. Sheath sucked but, what can you do?

I've been carrying a bench made I my pocket every day for at least 25 years. They are. very well made and the lifetime warranty is rock solid. I currently carry one of the automatic knives with a CPM magnacut blade and it holds an edge better than the D2 ever did. I'm usually a cheep old fart but I've never been one to skimp on knives and optics, their just too important.

From: AK Pathfinder
Date: 10-Dec-24

I should have added that the reason I went with an automatic knife is due to a loss of manual dexterity. I'm 70 and the fingers just don't pick a dime or washer off a flat surface like they used to. It was getting a bit fumbling to get the Osborn open at times. The push button is a much easier knife to open and close with one hand for me. Check your local laws before you think of getting one, not legal to own in every state.

From: Dennis in Virginia Professional Bowhunters Society - Qualified Member

I have a 940 Osborne also. They are out of production now, but we're very good knives. I called Bench made last year to inquire about overhauling it and bring it back to top condition. Some of the work would be warranty covered, and some would have been on me.The knife is in a drawer now.

From: Biathlonman

I usually get one a year through work...have no complaints with them and never once doubted the quality. I'm more a Victornox man, but I find myself grabbing a bugout/mini bugout a lot...

Thanks for the tip ephphatha, I went to Walmart and the $10 Ozark Trails models are out of stock, but they did have the look alike white scale $5 ones in stock, I ordered 4 of those and 3 of their $5 Ozark Trails black flipper knives for stocking stuffers...8^)

I've been carrying a Kershaw Chill in my pocket the past few months and really like it... It's very slim and light weight at just 2oz... It's the first flipper knife I've owned...

From: Bluefeather

I looked for quite awhile to find a well made, tough, heavy duty EDC pocket knife and ended up with a Benchmade Mini Adamas with the CPM Cruwear blade and to me personally, the blade steel was worth the price. I also have knives made with 1095, 52100, D2, N690co, CPM3v and CPM S60V and don't regret paying the asking price for any of them.

From: Mindful

If your eyes are on saving “saving a Buck”…..don’t bother, but if quality and satisfaction are your aim, you will likely be glad you went with a Benchmade…..

Have one Benchmade I got on clearance years ago for about 40% off-- would not have paid full price--and I've spent some money on knives to that's not an issue. I buy what I like and can afford. It's a decent pocket knife, looks good, blade is decent, carry it once in a while. Daily carry is usually a Houge Doug Ritter design. Doug Ritter used to design for Benchmade but they had a falling out. Sometimes I carry a Knives of Alaska Featherlight Hunter. It's just a knife. Don't see Benchmade as any much different than any other knife company in most respect. Benchmade values and mine don't align so I don't buy anything from them anymore.

From: Chelo
Date: 11-Dec-24

I have 2 benchmade EDC. It is a lot of money for a knife, but they hold an edge and warranty their product.. Both needed service, and they were resharpened and fixed no questions asked. I’m hard on knives at work, so I cycle through a few cheaper fully serrated $50 spyderco tenacious knives for work. I’m not sure if spyderco would resharpen them if I sent them back. When you use them to cut geo grid matting, clean out grease zerks, and shoot em through a straw blower, I just chalk them up to 6 months being a useful life. I’ll always pay a premium for someone who stands behind their product.

Stating the obvious, cost reflects supply and demand, and business cost of manufacturing here vs Asian. We all know labor, materials, overhead, environmental compliance, and profit margin (sometimes) is substantially greater here vs Asia.

Off topic.

Now that Asia manufactures what the US used to, it's become the environmental dump the U.S. used to be. When US manufacturing was outsourced to Asia so was pollution. Rivers, lakes, and lands that were toxic dumps post WWII are now 'clean'.

This city/county has grown 8X what it was in 1962 when we moved here. Yeah that's right, 8X in 52 years. That's mind blowing growth. As a carpenter I was part of that for 50 years.

For a fact two trash dumps that were in active use in the 60s and 70s now identify as a subdivision, and the other as a beautiful landscaped park in the foothills of Pikes Peak. People enjoy life living and recreating over dumps. They have no clue. No bs.

Where can you get CPM S90v steel cheap?

I'm all ears.....grin

Cheap knives use cheap steel....they work but don't hold an edge as well as a quality knife.

I owned a Benchmade and it was a nice knife but not what I was expecting. I think the ticket is a mid level knife with s30v steel.

S30V Buck knives at Cabelas and Midwayusa for $75 model 110 and 112

From: Bluefeather
Date: 12-Dec-24

I had a Buck folder in the early 70's when they still used 440C and loved that knife but lost it. I replaced it with an Old Timer that has a 1095 carbon steel blade and still have and use it from time to time. There is no doubt they made some good knives. It's when they started using J420HC steel that I stopped buying them.

From: Bob Rowlands
Date: 12-Dec-24

I put my Walmart lockback folder to work on tasks that I'd never use my Buck folders on. I'd never buy a Benchmade or any other pricey knife for that reason alone.

I am a knife nut I don't collect them they get used. I have carried a knife since I was 5 years old and I have had a bunch of difference one and right now I carry a $30 neck knife and a $60 Puukko and a $300 Benchmade they all work great,

I like Bourbon and liken knives a lil bit to that. All my buddies said I had to try some Blanton's. First off, I could never find it. Then I found a bottle and talk about sticker shock. Well anyway, It didn't taste any. better to me than Woodford or 1863. Lots of cheaper bourbons that taste as good to me. Same with knives. I have a buck 110 that I have used since I was in college. I still use it. It is real thin now from sharpening but I figure it will last me the rest of my life.

From: RonG

Well folks I have five bench made knives, they are more than worth the money, You are not stuck with the crappy steel that buck, Schrade, columbia river and most all knives that cost less than one hundred dollars.

These knives are precision instruments with the blades made out of steel that will not dull for a long time, you get to look at the different steels that are available for each model, I pick the Rockwell hardness of 64.

They will resharpen your blade free for life. I found with a good diamond sharpener I can do it myself.

I can't open a knife one handed because of my arthritis so I got the blade assist which is legal in Florida, may not be in some of the northern states.

Believe me you get what you pay for, I use a knife at least ten times a day and this is the only knife that will hold up.

I'm not trying to talk you into buying one I'm just letting you know the quality is there, most may not need these features.

From: AK Pathfinder
Date: 13-Dec-24

I'm right there with you Ron. The last 3 I've bought had the 64 Rockwell blades and they may be harder for some to sharpen but once you get the hang of it they stay sharp a long time.

This thread seems to have turned into something like buying bows. Why should I spend over $1,000 on a bow when a $200 dollar one shoots just fine. I guess it's just what sort of quality and appearance you're willing to pay for.

From: Jack Whitmrie jr

From: mahantango
Date: 14-Dec-24

Jack, I’m right there with you on whiskey and blades. Benchmade are good knives, good steel, American made, but have been plagued with QC issues and for the cost they should be damn near perfect. At the risk of opening the China can of worms, I have premium steel knives from WE/Civivi, Artisan, Sencut that are flawless out of the box.
