Just Picked up this Herters Sitka. It is in fantastic shape and it is a really nice shooting bow. It's 62" and 45#. Any other Sitka owners out there?

You've got to love the mustard colored glass.

I had 2 Sitkas, one was factory camouflaged. I still own 3 other Herters, 52” Perfection and 62” & 64” Sambars. The lengths are Herter’s not AMO. The Sambars have massive heavy risers.

I just spotted on on Craigslist which looks similar, is gorgeous, but does have a sight mounted. The price is reasonable but I didn't approach the seller about shipping since it isn't particularly close to me.

Nice looking bow Jerry.

Enjoy it in good health my friend!

Those are great bows! I used to have a factory camo painted Sitka when I shot my first mule deer...way back in 1973. Why do we ever sell those great bows?

Yes Sir, have 2, one a 30# and a 50 #. They're a blast to shoot. I'm looking for a Magnum, the one with the 4 horns.

Every Herters bow I've had in my hands have been good shooters. The best were Sambar Perfection and a Sitka.

I was looking back on some old threads and the best I can tell this is a 1976 model. Anyone know for sure? Thanks

Here's the Craigslist post for a Herters Perfection Sitka, 45#, 58", for $140. If interested, maybe the guy would ship it. I have a bow coming now off Craigslist that a guy agreed to ship. I made it easier by sending him a label using Shippo.com.

One of my favorite vintage recurves. Mine is a ‘71, 62” 40# . Always lusted after them in the Herters catalog when I was a kid.

In 1976 the 58" and 62" were called the Perfection Sitka Mag. Hunter. Tan/black glass. $47.18 and $49.40

The 66" and 72" were called the Perfection Sitka and they were white glass. $52.73 and $63.83

There Perfection Premier Magnum Hunter which came in 58",60", and 62" was $56.95.

There claim was that it shot 200fps with a 29"500 gr. arrow out of a 55# bow.

“ I just spotted on on Craigslist which looks similar, is gorgeous, but does have a sight mounted. ”

WHO CARES???

A few screw holes do NOTHING truly Evil to a bow. Let others‘ foolish biases save you money, and maybe enjoy the bow As Is. Who knows — maybe you’ll be deadly accurate with that sight???

“It’s a little known fact” that bows with sights on them can be shot with absolutely no attention paid to the sights, but bows without sights cannot be shot using sights….

I’m ready to start shooting with sights just to see how accurate I can be when I reduce the error in my aiming system. Just to see how well I can shoot. I probably won’t hunt that way, because I don’t want to be DEPENDENT on the sights, but think about it….

A rifleman who can ignore the irons and shoot “instinctively” to hit fast-moving or distant targets is considered to be an exceptional shot, but a bowman who cants his bow to the side and makes an “instinctive” shot despite the sights is “cheating”??

Bite me.

Just like holding at Anchor vs Snap-shooting — the Archer who can do either/both is NOT the lesser hand.

620176011

I believe this is the meaning behind the Herter's serial numbers.. Someone correct me if I'm mistaken.

You can separate the serial number like this... 62-01-76-011

62--> 62"

01--> is the month.. in this case it is January

76--> Year 1976

011--> 11th bow made that month.

I'm not sure if it was the 11th bow that month, or the 11th bow of that particular model. I'm thinking it is the the 11th bow of the month, otherwise there could have been identical serial numbers on different bows.

You may be right there Chad.

Thanks for decoding the serial number. I’ll apply your formula to my 3 Herters.

From: Bugle up

The one on Craigslist has the following numbers:

5801170017 One more digit than the example above.

58....58" 01....January 1.....?? 70....1970 017....17th bow that month

With all due respect Corax, I don't think a thread on Herters is the place for more of your verbal discharge . Some folks don't want a bow with holes drilled in it...

From: Wildhog
Date: 13-Dec-24

Chad - thanks for the info on the serial numbers
