A while back some one listed an idea for making your own shaft tamer or wood arrow straightener. If I recall, I think they suggested using a metal pulley from the hardware store. (size?) Anyone with a better memory than me?

That's all I use-- single metal pulley from the hardware store. Wheel has groove large enough to accommodate woods.

If you have two hands you already have a shaft straightener, just apply some heat to the area needing work and bend over the heal of your hand!!! When you use something like the shaft tamer your actually crushing the cells in the shaft making the shaft weak in that area,

Bob x3. I've made a thousand arrow shafts and straightened all of them by hand. The stubborn ones get heat treatment.

Thanks everyone! I will continue to straighten by hand. it is just sometimes when I have to use heat (once and a while) the arrow gets a little hot to touch.

Jon: Use heat all the time, your shafts will stay straighter. Ware a glove on the hand you're bending the shaft over.

A tip when straighting shafts, don't lay them down on a cool surface when finished. the cold surface will pull the heat out of one side of the shaft and it will become crooked again. Stand them up in a paper or PVC tube until cool.

Thanks, aromakr! Excellent information! I don't always heat, but in future it may be the best procedure to follow.
