What is the minimum amount of twists per inch (or inch per twist) on an flemished twist string?

What is the optimum twist rate?

My first crack at making a string...

You'll likely get lots of different opinions.

My target twist count which I find optimal (after loop twist up) is 1/2 twist per target length of string.

Example: My 60" strings will get 30 twists in the main body after I have constructed the loops.

I don't like going under 10, or over 1 twist per inch.

Rick, would that equate to 1twist every 2"?

“I don't like going under 10, or over 1 twist per inch.”

Is there a typo in that, do I just not know nearly enough about making strings?

Most of the string I make are between 54-64”. I will typically get between 30-35 or so full twists in the main body after I make the second loop. When you’re making your second bundle, keep an eye on your bundle tension. If one side hangs down more your tension is off. When you extend both ends out, you want them to be equal. If not That can lead to a noisy string, and sometimes cabling. I learned when making strings , so many guys do it differently. Take lots of notes and find a great string builder to help you out. Chad weaver helped me a ton when I was learning. He would take time to answer emails and everything. Also lots of great you tube videos. The old one from Bear Paw was the best I have found.

Yes.

What I meant to say is - I don't like going under 10 overall twist in the main body, although I have had as few as 7 as long as the loops are well constructed.

Stix, that's not the greatest picture, but from what I can see it looks good.

Stix. Looks like about one turn per inch of string length. That's sufficient, though I like a little more, closer to 1 1/2 twists per inch. I don't like going over two twists per inch.

From what I see that is a very acceptable amount of twists in a string. I personally wouldn't want very many fewer than what you show. For your first string from the picture you did a really did good job. Yours looks WAY better than my first one from what I remember. DANNY

I noticing that you are getting a pretty good range of answers as to preferred twists per inch, and I have to wonder if some of that is a function of the material that is being used. Does it make a difference if you are using Dacron versus D 97 versus Mercury 2?

No.

I measure the twist rate the best I could and it is about 1 full twist in 2.5" at the furthest point from the loop(close to the serving)

I would try for about 1 twist per inch.

After all, it is the twist that helps to keep the ends from coming undone.

Just my opinion.

When I made my B50 strings I aimed for a twist about every 1.5 inches is what I liked to see at brace height. I also made the loop tails longer so extra length in the string jig was required. For me learning to make strings with no teacher and no youtube vid there were a few fails getting the brace height correct and the string twist 'look' I wanted.

When loops are finished, twist up 20 twist per end, 40 total. I consider that the least.
