Just wanting to show a few of the latest attempts of improving what I’ve been up to since June when I was “Gifted” a starter kit and now I’m ate up with the Bug of can’t get enough of this knapping. Notching is my biggest problem and even though I draw a center line down the middle I still have problems with creating a shelf or step of some sort. I wish I had capstone hands on experience but so far it’s just watching videos and my “Mentor” as I shall call him who will text me or call me and give me some pointers on what I can do . He’s very easy on me and doesn’t holler at me like my Dad used to when I do something wrong lol. One day I hope to meet this gentleman and learn some hands on experience . Anyway here’s a few I recently pressure flaked. I was after a design of a specific head I really liked the looks of but not sure if there’s a name for it but I used a preform I was gifted and I actually had the design but as I tried to notch I pushed a cone so big out that I messed one side up . I hate to waste something and thought “What would a Native actually do” with one he may have messed up? So I made super big notch’s and it turned out ok and usable . It’s made from Mahogany obsidian and I love the caramel rusty color of this material. It reminds me of my old “Johny West “ cowboy and his horse I had as a kid and the color is on the 59 Kodiak glass . Keefers

Sorry for the typos but my I pad fills in what it thinks I’m trying to say and I don’t proof read all the time . Anyway here’s that head completed .

Now Here’s one I actually had as well but again it messed up at the nothing area and I almost threw it in a box to Finish some other time but I actually found a few others made that look just like it . It looks like “Batman” or the emblem of him actually . Here he’s hanging upside down like a bat .

Now here’s one more I tried to copy the cut out I made from a photo from the first picture in my opening post. I got to a point the notch “Stalled” on me and instead of going further I backed away and said “It is Finished” and stopped. Here’s is the cut out paper one against the obsidian I done

Now Sunday morning I got up very early like Always and I had that “Knap Itch” which is a very ,very contagious disease…. Remember I’m not good at spelling been out of school for 42 years and spelling wasn’t my major but lunchtime and recess was . I made this one out of some hard as heck rock from Mexico or Texas I was told . I’m learning and can’t remember what was written on it but so glad the gentleman has really good handwriting and wrote on the last set he sent me. Am I learning well the answer is “Yes” and it’s been a life long dream I never imagined I would do until now .I’ll be 61 this month and it’s a new spark so to speak in my life .Thanks to the “Gentleman” who started that spark .God knows who he is and there’s a “Crown” earned for what he did for me and I’m sure others as well. Here’s that head .

look mighty fine to me, I would love to be able to do what you have done. I would be thrilled with anyone of those and you are learning quite well. you have been blessed and it shows. the notches, to me it is what it is, they are just meant to help hold the head in whatever it is put in. beautiful rock too, just beautiful.

Definitely improving Keefers

I like the early morning one best. Goes great with a good cup of coffee.

Got a pretty good guess about your mentor and if it’s who I think it is he’s a good guy.

Heck if it isn’t who I think it is he’s a good guy

Keep at it you are improving. The notching will come

Brian the three I posted this morning are all the same head just can’t see through it as well laying on the counter top. It was marked Tricolor obsidian and I can see why. I actually liked the way it tossed the flakes . What I do now is draw out a pattern on the preform that I like and mark a center line with a sharpie on both front and back and then down the edges so I don’t go above the center line .This one took four complete passes down cause I was trying to train my hand on not pushing too hard and keep my flakes as thin as I can and not travel all the way over to the other side and blow out the opposite edge if that makes sense ? My first pass all around actually removed all the flats and stayed pretty much to the center. I look at Mike Cooks work and am so amazed at how pretty each of his flakes are and appear to,look like a water fall effect and clean . Points are very thin and look so sharp. I’m so Thankful there are guys that are so willing to help with what they know and some sent pm to me.
