Is there any harm in leaving a modern fiberglass laminated bow strung?

Opinions vary, I am sure!

Mine have been strung for many years. The only time they get unstrung is to change brace height or a new string.

From: Phil Magistro
Date: 29-Sep-24

No harm.

Mine get unstrung each time I finish shooting or after each time hunting...I never leave them strung... Harley

Strung the majority the time. Unstring them when traveling in my truck. DANNY

I bought a zipper case for a strung bow so I don’t have to keep stringing and unstringing. Bows not in the current use rotation are unstrung and hanging in a peg.

Never unstring them, and never have had any issues.

can't see any harm leaving them strung, my black widow is never unstrung except to change a string now and then.

Stone -

So, you're going to take the word of a bunch of people you don't know?

Here's a reality check: Most modern bows can, in fact, remain strung indefinitely without harm, until something happens. What could possibly go wrong? Think about it, or do a search on it here or just google it.

Viper out.

I would leave my strung for several days, then one day the cat chewed the string into. Then all h::ll broke lose. We’ll never forget that that day.

I keep mine strung. Hung on cup hooks.

Viper. It's called experience. Of course anything can happen but in my 60 years of hunting and leaving one or more bows strung for the season, 2 months or so, I have never had a problem with one of my bows.

From: jerseyman

Never leave them in a car or truck in the sun especially in the summer you will have a big surprise.

Don’t leave them strung and in a hot car! Setting on one end in the corner!

From: John Horvers

Always unstring mine, only takes a moment to do so. Only time i leave strung is if on a hunting trip.

From: Bob Rowlands

After the upper limb of my wife's #30 Red Stag delaminated I started unstringing mine.

From: M60gunner

Mine are mostly left strung. In fact Black Widow recommends leaving their bows strung. Stringing up and unstringing can cause limb twist if procedure done incorrectly. Left one of my SK’s strung for a year, hanging up of course. There are a few precautions like the hot car, hot garage, hot attic or leaning against the wall. Mine have always been in a temperature controlled room. But then I wouldn’t store my bows strung or unstrung in those bad conditions.

From: B.T.

Both, I like to keep 1 or 2 strung. I’ve had my 3 piece A&H longbow strung for the last 2 years except to change limbs or go to the range.

From: Burnsie

During hunting season, my main bow stays strung from October 1 through January. They are unstrung when they are hanging for any length of time in my rack

From: PEARL DRUMS

Mine are braced up only when in use. I'm a self bow guy at heart and transfer that rule set over to my glassers.

From: GUTPILEPA

Leave them strung all hunting season never had any issues matter of I had one strung for years and it’s the same poundage from the day I bought it

From: Buzz

Unstrung.

From: Gibby48

Always strung for yrs.The chance of twisting limb isnt worth the slim chance of problem from leaving them strung

From: hawkeye in PA

Bear archery now recommends leaving them strung for no longer than seven days or so.

The only time I leave a bow strung is stretching a new string overnight. And all mine are longbows.

From: Live2Hunt

I leave mine strung during the season and when I start practicing prior to. After I unstring. The bowyer told me this, so that is what I do.

The tension on a strung bow has an effect. It may not be much. It may not be noticeable. But it's there. Suit yourself. I unstring mine when I'm not using them.

From: two4hooking

Another beauty of the long longbow. No, stringer needed and when I rest, it rests.

From: jons

When the weather turns -20 they are unstrung.

From: bodymanbowyer
Date: 30-Sep-24

No harm if they are kept out of the heat 72° and below. Just don't let them see HIGH Heat for an extended period of time Like more than a day. Oh definitely don't let it sit in your truck, while you go and grab lunch. In the summer time. Jf

Henry Bodnik told me at the last trad show in Kalamazoo that the only time he unstrings his is to adjust brace height, travel or changing string. I keep my go to bow (Stalker) strung. My other bows on the rack are unstrung.

I leave recurves strung longbows not

From: RonG
Date: 01-Oct-24

Well, I might as well put my two cents in.

Carbon Limbs probably be alright to leave strung.

No wooden bow should be left strung.

The reason some bow manufacturers don't want you to unstring is if not carefully done you could twist a limb On a RECURVE. You aren't going to mess up a longbow.

If you have a long bow unstring it, if you have a recurve learn how to do it properly, this is part of maintaining your equipment, this is part of archery.

I will always unstring my bows, I don't look at my bow as a toy to play with once in a while it is a beautiful piece of wood, fiberglass, maybe action wood or what ever carefully put together into a functional weapon.

You need to just unstring carefully everytime you get done shooting, hey man it wasn't strung when you bought it. All of the famous archers always unstrung.

I know you asked about the modern glass lam, you still have lamination that you should not leave under tension.

I feel like Orion ! I'm concerned with memory so I always unstring mine if not shooting it!

I was talking to Don Assenheimer one day, a friend of his had one strung for 5-6 years, used it as a cane. Still tracked in the string grooves, no twist, nothing wrong at all,HA.

I unstring mine at end of season/hunting time. Also, when they are stored in the garage in Texas heat.

The one or two pounds lost over time, will probably exceed one’s an average lifespan ! No big deal for me.

From: ottertails

During hunting season they are left strung and sometimes thru out the year with no issues. But anymore, if it has bamboo cores, I won't leave it strung, from now on I'll unstring after every hunt or shooting session.

I had two bows with all bamboo cores follow the string, one a hybrid longbow that I had left strung for almost a year and the other an ASL that would follow the string after just a few days of being left strung.. . inferior bamboo used I would guess. In fact, I could actually bend the limbs back to where they were but it would always go back to losing its slight backset to string follow.

I've talked about it with more than a couple of bowyers including the one who built me the the hybrid and was told yes, that can and has happened with boo but not all boo.... probably something to do with the tempering or lack there of.

All my other non-bamboo bows no issues.

I've left my bows strung for a few days or a week during archery season. But for any longer periods for storage and when not in use I unstring them. Also, as a few have already said if they are in my truck they are unstrung. The heat in a vehicle can damage a bow.
