I recently finished this Red Cedar Self bow from a clear stave. I've shot it about 100 times. It finished out with 1/2 " string follow. It's mostly sapwood with only about 1/4" heartwood on the belly. I backed it with Rawhide and then put the snakeskin cloth on it. 64",46#@26", 1 3/8" wide @ the fadeout to 1/2" tips. It bends slightly thru the handle. When I knew I was getting close by leaning into it I left it strung @ low brace for 8 hours. I've got a lot of time in it. I hope it holds up LOL!

Beautiful bow. I love Cedar. I hope you don't mind some questions. I can't initiate a P.M. John Strunk once said Juniper is nearly as good as Yew for bows, when handled correctly. Everyone in West Texas refers to the common growth there as Juniper &/or Cedar along with a few unprintable names. It chokes other growth out & don't offer much in the way of feed for anything. It looks & smells like Cedar. It is pretty wood & ready available standing or bulldozed. Is it anything near the same. Will it make a bow? Where could I find information on working it? Thanks, >>>----> Ken

Two Bears, I don't know much about that West Texas Cedar. I made my bow from Eastern Red Cedar, mountain grown and seasoned for for 4 years with the bark off. The stave was really clear with no knots, just tiny pins almost like Yew. Vol 4 of Trad Bowyers Bible has some info on Eastern Red Cedar.Sorry, I know thats not much help. K.T.

2 Bears. Western Junipers are closely related to ERC.
They have a reputation for being a bit more bow friendly as a material.

Just to keep the terms clear, that beautiful bow is a backed bow, not self bow. (The rawhide is the backing.)
Very nice looking and just right handle treatment.

A real beauty, I'll bet it shoots smooth. I really like the way the limbs bend, nice job on the tiller, every bit of that bow is working.

I tell you folks if you haven't shot a selfbow you are not complete.
I use no string silencers, bow is quiet.

Very good job! I made a hickory backed red ceder bow, it was a smooth shooter but the hickory failed and the bow blew.
I have a casual friend who has made a ton of bamboo backed red cedar bows, great performers.

Well done. Having made a lot of furniture and other things out of ERC , you are braver than I. I would suspect all that sap wood will be a great benefit for its longevity.

Beautiful bow. I have a thing for juniper and ERC.
They are like the girls my mom warned me about when I was younger. Pretty, fast and smell so good.
Hope you have a good relationship with her. They are also known to be heartbreakers.
The tiller looks good and the sapwood should help. Nice work
Bjrogg
PS that’s interesting that the cedar belly overpowered the hickory back Eric. Hickory has a pretty good reputation for tension
