It's that time of year again to decide which bow I'm going to hunt with and what arrow-Broadhead I'm going to use. This year my first choice is my Mad dog Prairie Predator 62 inch 50@28 longbow. I'll be using camo Goldtip 500 with 150gr Magnus two blade heads. Second choice is my Yellowstone Old Timer 47@28, same arrows just 175gr Magnus broadheads. I've bee shooting them with broadheads and everything is working good so far. How's everyone else doing?

I'm undecided between two setups:

1972 Bear Super Kodiak, 55#, Aluminum or Cedar arrows, Bear Razorhead or Journeyman broadheads. Or 1997 Bear Super Kodiak 60# Aluminum or Cedar arrows, Bear Razorhead or Journeyman broadheads.

I'm leaning towards the 1972 Bear Super Kodiak.

1st choice is Toparchery ILF with 55# Samick LB limbs 400 carbon arrows with Steel Force 225 gr heads 2nd is Fedora Extreme LB with the exact same arrow and head

I thought about opening up the same type of thread post. I have been thinking about what I would hunt with, or at least start with for a while now.

I have been shooting 3D all spring and summer, mostly with selfbows, and I want to hunt with one of them this year, but after shooting a lot of different bows, for several months, I believe I have decided on my Howard Hill Tembo 54# with GT Traditionals, 400's, with about 250 to 275 grains up front. I used the long 3 to 1, Grizzly single bevel broadheads last year. The did good, on penetration and I shurly needed it last year, but not so great on blood trails, but shot placement may have had something to do with that also.

I bought a bunch of ACE's, so I may go that route. My arrows will probably weight about 625 grains more or less.

At any rate, I have a bunch of different bows, but that Tembo, has really grown on me. I do think it's the absolutely most forgiving bow I have ever had.

My bows are fighting for the pole position this year. I shot 4 recurves and 3 longbows, all put their first shots in the 10 ring. Considering how hard it is to shoot a little squirrel, and how unlikely shooting a deer is…it doesn’t seem to matter, and I’m good with that.

Brandon Stahl Homage 1 piece recurve. Easton FMJ's with VPA 3 blade broadheads. Leaving Saturday for a Maine bear hunt.

From: somedude
Date: 22-Aug-24

Still fighting amongst myself about which one gets the nod. I seem to shoot all of them equally well. Leaning towards my Bear Kodiak Special 40@28 but around 47-48 at my draw length. But I do have my uncles Bear Tigercat 50@28 is also high on my list. Got about 3 weeks to decide. ><> del

I'll be hunting with my Howatt Hunter 50#. Will be a toss up on either 2117 or 2020 aluminum arrows with either Bear Razorheads or Grizzly broad heads. With adapters I have the broadheads at 225gn each. I've had 2 great seasons with this set up and getting back into practice with it this past week. I've been shooting 3 different bows throughout the spring and summer but it's time to buckle down and get ready.

From: Phil Magistro
Date: 22-Aug-24

I’ll be hunting with a Bivouac Hill Jack (43#). or Union Jack (40#), both ASLs. I was going to use front loaded 1916s but I decided to go with 1816s tipped with Wensel Woodsman or Bear heads. Arrow weight is still over 11 gpp.

Dakota, I feel your pain pain. I am the same way too many bows. Too many options..

I’m four days out from leaving and just decided a couple days ago that I am going to shoot my stalker riser with Uukha sx50 limbs. Quiet, fast smooth as silk.

I will try to post a pic ….

Howard hill legend stick

Home made cedar arrows

Side stalker leather quiver

Ace, Zwickey and or Howard Hills. (Need to fletch up some stiffer spine cedars I have for the hills) but excited to try them for first time. Was able to do some horse trading for enough to make a half dozen up.

Back up will be the beloved HH cheetah :) but some reason this legend stick just puts them in the sweet spot every time.

Change of plans. My Quinn Stallion has pushed its way to the top. 45@28 so it’s around 50-54 at my 31 inch draw.. 2018s with Bear razors or Wendel woodsman’s on the pointed end. I’m feeling it! Sept 13 come in!! ><> del

I am choosing a 45 pound K mag for this fall.

From: Live2Hunt
Date: 04-Sep-24

I may have to use my bear super K unless I get my Wallace back. Fine tuning the super K now, but it is just short for me and at my draw a higher poundage that I am wanting 62# @ 31". Getting some big ass calluses on my top and bottom fingers from shooting it. Would love to find a 64", 45# black beauty super k, but wow the prices they get for them now!!!

I’m using my 62” schafer recurve, 50@28, with gold tip Hunter pros 400 spine, with a hundred grain brass insert and 250 single bevel cutthroat. I may switch out the cutthroats with Simmons’s glue on treeshark with steel insert.

635 total arrow weight

While I have multiple bows set up and ready. I will hit with two, both are Silvertip’s - 62” 51.5 # at 27#. One is old school net camo limbs w a walnut riser, the other is a black & white ebony - riser & limbs w carbon in the limbs. I will use arrows dynamic nitro stingers and 125 gr woodsman & 150 gr Valkyrie blood eagles. The total arrow weight will be between 500 to 515 grains. Phots of bows to come. Good luck ti everyone - Joe

I'll be using my Sunset Hill (47#@27) with Sweetland forgewood arrows tipped with Hunter heads, for my Colorado elk hunt about a week or so from now. A 45# Bear TD is my back-up bow.

Later, back home in Wisconsin, I'll probably use both of those as well as Howard Hill and Northern Mist longbows. Whichever strikes my fancy on any given day.

Depending on how much or if I get to hunt this season, I will take my Freeman Longbow (51 @ my 27")or the Hummingbird (60@28) I shot last season. Current arrow choice for the longbow will start out with POC and tipped with Eskimo or Greenies. The Hummingbird will have DarkTimbers with 100 grain insert and 150 grain Barrie Rocky Mountain Supremes.
