What kind of critter do you think this is? This picture was taken on my son's farm. I'm thinking it's some breed of dog; a neighbor is convinced it's a bear.

So.... here's the actual trail cam pic.

a weird looking one. i would guess small young bear from that photo.

Here it is blown up a little:

Looks like a bear. Got the butt of a bear and stubbier legs like one compared to a dog.

Body definitely bear, head a little odd, but not a dog. Maybe a dog in a bear costume.

A Bear, small one, but definitely a Bear.

I'll go with bear.

That's got the looks of a cat to me. What size material is that vertical frame made with 3x3 angle?

Definitely a bear

From: David McLendon

If you take the pic to MSPaint, convert itto black and white and bump the definition up it looks like it has a good portion of its head in a white maybe 5 gallon bucket.

Was there a bucket sitting by the feeder leg?

good catch David Mclendon. not a canine. if that is a bucket, it's not a bear. leaves a stretched out feline, I think. But I'm not betting much $.

Black squirrel

There's no bucket there unless the critter brought it.

Squawsnatch?

From: Lowcountry

I originally thought bear, but going by scale, either that feeder is gigantic, or the critter is small. I think it may be a fat house cat.

How tall are the legs on that feeder - 18", 36"?

From: Saphead Compton's Traditional Bowhunters

Chupacabra ! I guess bear. Back legs and feet give it away

Looks like a cat to me.

A really healthy bobcat.

I can even make out what look like similar fur patterns, but the image quality is to bad to enhance them enough to show on here.

Rick

How deep is that grass? Sure looks to me as if it has its off-side heel planted firmly on the ground, and there are only about 3 critters that will do that — raccoons, bears, and people.

So I’m tempted to say bear.

But the overall shape seems totally wrong, and it’s just about to lift that hindmost foot off the ground, so that at least partially explains the geometry on the forward of the hind feet. Also, there’s a light spot in the general vicinity of “neck” which could well be the white patch on the back of a bobcat’s ear, and there’s not enough information for my brain to convince me that I’m seeing a bear’s head, but I can imagine a bobcat head, looking at least partially toward the camera. There’s also enough hint of a tail and some white belly fur to suggest a bobcat.

So WAG-ing like a hungry Labrador, I’m gonna say it’s a good-sized and fully matureTom bobcat.

Looks like a hog to me.

I'd say a bear

From: B.T.

Certainly does look like a fat old Bobcat.

From: Jarhead
Date: 08-Jul-24

I zoomed in a bunch... going with "fat Bobcat with something in its mouth."

From: Jarhead
Date: 08-Jul-24

Bobcat... you can see the shoulder hump and his ear is light in the sun. David's picture really shows it well.

From: Trying hard
Date: 08-Jul-24

The world may never know... The animal looks a bit frumpy to be a bobcat... That's one of my mom's words...not mine.

From: Corax_latrans
Date: 08-Jul-24

What you’re calling out as “Frumpy” is kinda covered under Old Dude Privilege… but not to be confused with a “dad bod” or “dad bod run amok”….. ;)

In West Virginia it could be a Wampus Cat.

I'm going with hog. If not a hog a bear.

From: Zbone
Date: 09-Jul-24

Back legs indicate bear...

From: Rick Barbee
Date: 09-Jul-24

The flanks of a cat really stretch out/expand when the legs are extended like that.

I don't know much about bears, but I pretty much live with bobcats, and see them almost daily.

I'm not positive on my call, but I'll stick with cat until a better picture is produced to prove otherwise.

Rick

From: selstickbow
Date: 09-Jul-24

not a hog, missing the arched back shape, and no hog ever stood with back leg like that. and I don't see the fat rolly poly shape of a younger bear / cub there either. I'd think to see a bigger butt end if it was a bear. I'll stick with bobcat, EVEN though it appears borderline too bulky for one.

From: Rick Barbee
Date: 09-Jul-24

Also, from the picture we can only assume it is bob tailed.

There very well could be a long tail wrapped around the off side that we can't see. If that were known to be the case I would say mountain lion.

Absolutely "nothing" about it's body shape, or posture suggests hog to me. Quite the contrary actually.

Jim, was this picture pulled from the camera card, or from the website/app ?

If from the website/app, is there any way you could get the picture from the camera card to show us ?

Rick

From: 1buckurout
Date: 09-Jul-24

Rick,

It's an app from a website.

btw... if it matters... I know distance in a picture can be deceiving so I asked my son if he had any idea how far behind the feeder this critter is. He says at least 20 yards.

From: 1buckurout
Date: 09-Jul-24

Draven makes a compelling case for a bobcat, but it looks too blocky and the legs are too short for me to go there.

He's got two cameras on his place. Hopefully, he can get another/better picture of the thing soon.

From: Hornsfan
Date: 09-Jul-24

Looks like a hefty bobcat to me. Seems too short for a bear.

From: Rick Barbee
Date: 09-Jul-24

Jim I suspected the picture was the thumbnail image from the webapp due to it's low quality. Really interested in seeing the image from the camera card.

If indeed that animal is 20 yards from the feeder, then it is huge, in which case it could not be a cat unless saber tooth tigers are making a comeback.

Rick

From: Lowcountry
Date: 09-Jul-24

Scale makes a lot of difference - if the animal is 20 yards past the feeder, then it looks like a bear to me.

Sabertooth Tiger. Just for the fun of it. :-D

Rick

From: Draven
Date: 10-Jul-24

Jim, I am not 100% sure is a bobcat, I am sure is a feline. My take is that feline was alerted by something under the feeder, hence the lowered body position that may trigger a "bulkiness" on a vey low details camera.

From: Draven
Date: 10-Jul-24

Jim, what's the height between the ground and the platform? It looks around 3'-4' max. What animal in the area has between 1'-6" and 2' height at shoulder? A bobcat is right at this height but still I have my doubts.

From: Andy Man
Date: 10-Jul-24

I'm still saying its a Dog

Where is the farm located ? Are bear common there ?

Like many others, I'm hoping for additional photos.

sorry. doubled up. scale tree at 24-30 inches at ground. figger the feeder posts at 5 feet apart. critter is no more than 5 feet from feed posts. Critter is more like 3 feet total length. bobcat. it's a great puzzle.

Wth...the hybrid result of a bear crossbred with a hog who's mother was a bobcat on steroids and an Arrdvark for a daddy. Hard to tell exactly but seems right ...and more importantly, did I spell 'Arrdvark correctly? ;)

From: Trying hard
Date: 11-Jul-24

Aardvark...this should be correct spelling

From: mountaineer

I'd buy that the animal is 20 yards from the camera, but NO WAY that animal is 20 yards behind that feeder structure.

From: Rick Barbee
Date: 11-Jul-24

[[[ "I'd buy that the animal is 20 yards from the camera, but NO WAY that animal is 20 yards behind that feeder structure." ]]]

That's my thinking also, but pictures can be (often are) deceiving, especially low quality pictures, so my thinking isn't set in stone.

Rick

From: ottertails
Date: 11-Jul-24

Trying...yes, that would be the correct spelling.

The critter, whatever it is, looks like it's about to go under the structure. Or could be angling towards the pond for a drink.
