Decided to go sit behind the barn this morning just to have a short sit before church. My little patch of woods is great in early season but when the farm next to me cuts the corn my place dries up quick. I really had planned on shooting squirrels since I doubted I’d see a deer. So there I was putting the stare down on a squirrel that just wouldn’t come quite close enough when I notice a deer walking in my orchard. It was a big fat spike. He was walking steady as bucks tend to do this time of year. Not looking left or right but just walking looking for lady love. As he passed behind a beach tree I came to full draw and was tracking him as he came out the other side. I was in the zone for once. If the bow made any noise at the shot neither the deer nor I heard it. Suddenly there was an orange flower of fletch right where I was looking on his shoulder. He gave a little growl as he busted down the hill toward the creek. I listened intently but never heard any splashing in the creek but I didn’t hear him crash either. I waited about 30 min and snuck back to the house for a hot cup of coffee. After a cup and a biscuit I took up the trail. The old Zwickey delta had done its job again. There was plenty of blood and easy to follow. He made it about 40 yards. I’ve been in a real shooting slump for a while (completely missed two deer last week under 10 yds) and had been working hard on form blank bale shooting every night. I was so proud of that shot on a walking deer at about 15 yards that I can’t explain it but if you’ve been there you know what I mean.
The bow is the HH Cheetah I got off Old Tim a few weeks ago. 43@29. I draw it a little over 30 so I guess 45-46 lbs. The arrow was a 31” carbon express with a Zwickey delta up front. 545 grains. The hit was in the meat of the shoulder with the blade cutting up and down it slid between two ribs going in and between two ribs going out but glanced off the far side bone in the shoulder. Penetration was good with only about half the feathers sticking out my side of the deer.
The entire process was a true blessing from God.

Congrats for sure, and I wish I'd followed the same thought with my 43# Cheetah! But I took a deer with my Levergun 30-30 on opening morning of Rifle season, but in a different place than I'd done most my hunting. I'd sit my best spot in a treestand in sept-oct I know 125-150 hours maybe and hadn't even seen a deer. But I'd saw several squirrels. So the second week of Rifle season I put on my orange and took my 22 rifle for a squirrel supper. One hour in the stand the 2nd biggest buck I've ever had opportunity at, spent 4 minutes in front me right where I'd hoped my best shot, from 6- 12yds! As they say, ain't that way they say it goes!! And never fired a shot with the 22. Well today's last day rifle season, and I ain't taking a 22 anymore!
