The 3 rams were bedded quite a distance below me as I hiked down the steep rocky slide from the 2.5 miles of railroad tracks I just hiked to get to this point. Staying on the South side of the ridge, I was out of sight as I carefully used my trekking poles to descend the treacherous ridge, undetected. A few slips and falls, my leather gloves protected my hands as I occasionally lost my footing when the rocks gave way and I crashed to the ground. The steep decline was not going to detour my determination to get down to where the 8 year old heavy dark horned monarch was napping. After an hour of hiking the descent, I believed I was close to the depth where the rams were bedded. I stopped and slid my limbs and ILF rise out of my pack. I assembled my bow and strapped on my 6 arrow quiver and strung my bow. With my thumb and little finger spread wide, I checked my brace height, dead on. I laid down my 2 trekking poles and removed gloves and my pack. Quickly I slid on my shooting tab and then crawled up to the ridge line, carefully avoiding the small cactus patches, nearly hidden from sight, amongst the tufts of long yellow grass. To my surprise, as I peered through the grass to search for the bedded rams, they were gone. I scanned the steep mountain side and spotted them on the move, walking in my direction headed straight to where I laid, ready to ambush them 160 yards away. The rams easily climbed the steep incline but halfway to me, they turned 90 degrees and began to walk Northward, away from me. My heart sank! All this work was for not. Fortunately, the trail brought them back on course and I could see it would take them directly across from my perch roughly 20 yards away. The slight breeze blew directly into my face. I ducked behind the ridge and turned my cap backwards. I pulled an arrow, nocked it and slowly positioned my body to point my left shoulder in the direction of the trail. The stiffness of my artificial hips made moving into a shooting position difficult. In just moments, I on would be sending my 2 blade VPA broadhead toward the lead ram. As they approached, I placed finger tension on the string, kneeled on my L knee pressing it into the mountain and stabilized myself with my R leg. It was fully extended and my boot sole lugs dug deep into the mountain side surface dirt. Talking myself through the process, I canted my bow, to minimize the amount of top limb extending above the horizon of the ridge. I drew my bow and as I hit my anchor, the trail switchback placed the rams looking away from me and the lead ram walked into a perfect broadside stance. I whistled to stop them, then immediately sent the arrow to the midpoint of the massive horned ram’s chest. I followed the pathway of the green beam of light emitting from the nock, straight to the Ram’s pump station. The unmistakable sound of the 455 grain arrow’s impact as it sliced through ribs, filled my ears as the ram bolted up the trail. His lungs were quickly unable to bring him any more oxygen and he stumbled and fell as his 2 companions raced by him. They left him where he laid beside the trail and rumbled up the steep mountain side. My ram was down! The three 4” florescent yellow feathers now, 3 fletched, broken arrow shaft pointed towards the endless sky. Likewise, I raised my hand up high in praise for His favor and Grace this 3ed attempt to harvest the magnificent Bighorn Sheep.

Wonderful trophy and a great story to boot! Congratulations!

I remember hunting mule deer in western ND maybe twenty years ago. I was traveling from one hunting area to another and as I came around a corner, a band of big horn sheep were crossing the road. I was about fifty yards away as two rams came into view. What a magnificent animal. I have tried for a permit every year for about as long as I can remember and dream about getting drawn.
