I have about a dozen of these broadheads and am thinking about trying them this season. I know that some of the older hunters out west used to like them. I would be using a 48# bow, not sure what arrows yet. I don't know how durable they are but they are plenty wide enough. I figure that a shoulder shot would not work out so well with these but surely be okay for ribs.

They have the ability to shoot through nearly anything on this continent. Durability is not an issue. Especially on whitetail deer.

Always heard good stories about Deadheads.

They seem to be well liked but I've always thought they have a poor mechanical advantage.

They made two sizes.

I have a couple setups with them on wood arrows. They really sharpen up nicely. I got my nephew interested in them and he killed his first traditional deer with one. It was a nice doe and he zipped right through her with a 49# Firefly longbow. 60 yard recovery.

I shot a couple of deer with them but the last one I did shoot on the shoulder and it folded over without any penetration to speak of. For me they were hard to sharpen but kept and edge really good.

Back when I first joined Bearstate Bowhunters (1978, I think) the first question I was asked “do you have any deadheads and are they for sale?”. I did and no they weren’t. Seems it was the most popular broadhead with the older guys at that time. I wonder how many are laying around the islands where the guys hunted sheep and goats?

I have had a soft whistle come off a Deadhead.

Put them on an arrow with Pope and Young fletch and you had the hiss of death!

I sorta inherited a few of the wide deadheads and thought it would be cool to kill a deer with one. I put one on a 2117 and waited for a perfect opportunity to use it. I was shooting a 55lb Ballistic recurve made by John Fasio. I had a big doe quartering away at 15 yards. The arrow entered just back of the rib cage and carried forward to lower opposite shoulder and neck area. She only went about 30 yards. That was in 1999 and the only time I used a deadhead, no damage to arrow and I still have it.

The whistle came from a buildup of paint on the inside of the slots of that vented head. If you take some sandpaper and smooth it out well, the whistling mysteriously goes away. :)

I have used the heads on several critters, plenty durable in fact pretty darn tough! And I love getting them razor sharp, they leave a heck of a blood trail..

There are Probably some broad-heads that can survive a hit on shoulder bones, but ordinarily, I would think that heavy bones should be avoided if at all possible?

I have about 25 and still use them along with my 2 blade Zwickeys. I mount them horizontal and use a full helical feather in either 5" or 5.5" HB shields. No problems with them whistling, perfect flight and tough as hell.

You guys that shoot them, which ones you like best the large or the small?

From: stealth2

Shoot both large and small. Either one leaves a large "Slit" and goo blood trail.
