This is my latest selfbow build, made last month. It is 62" long, 48 1/2 # @ 26". I had just recently put the beaver tail on for a grip.

I took out of the freezer my Timber Rattler and the Copperhead and skinned them to dry on a board. The Rattler had some skin damage about a third of the way from the head end so I had to work around it but I managed 2 pieces for this bow.

I really like this bow and had decided that it was one worthy of the beaver tail and the snake skin. I like it and the wife loves it. So this will most likely be my hunting bow this fall. I know that the skin can wear out at the end where the string slides over to the nock. I plan to add extra Tru Oil in this area. I also plan to use fine steel wool to lightly dull the shiny gloss finish. I just think that adding a skin or anything adds a lot of character to a bow.

Great work, the only thing that bothers me when sitting the bow down and reaching for it maybe the real thing.

You can't beat the camo. Don't lose it or reach for it & pick up a snake.;<) >>>----> Ken

Very nice looking bow! Good luck this season. I just picked up a 6ft black snake off the side of the road with no visible damage. It's in the freezer now. What was your method for skinning and tanning? Thanks, Eric

I just skin it down the middle of the belly and use thumb tacks to pin it to a board to dry. I salt it as well to draw out moisture etc. Then after it has dried, I trim off the excess belly skin then rinse it really good to get rid of the salt and such. I let it drip dry but not too dry as I glue it both the skin and the bow backing. Work out excessive glue. Forgot, I taped the sides of the bow and the belly with masking tape to keep glue from sticking to them.
