I made a self bow a year ago. Not cut for a shelf. It's about 50lbs at 30". The woodies I built for it fly stiff. Yesterday I shot some carbons through it and it loved them. Just perfect flight, can't get any better. 31 1/4" BOP 500 spine 200gr point 5/16" shaft. How do I replicate that in wood? I want to shoot 145-175gr point and I can't go under a 30" shaft. Thanks Charley

What is the spine of the arrows you made for the bow (spine @28", finished length, point weight)? How far from center is the arrow pass"

30 to 34 or 35 to 39 lb. wood shafts.

Bow is 5/8" positive center. Arrows 40-45lb (I think).tapered cedar 30 1/2"bop. I'm probably short drawing it a little cause I was scared to draw to my full length. I drew the carbon to a solid 30".

Charley:

I think doesn't really help much! If they are AMO 40-44 then they are 30-34@ 30". Do you mean the bow is 5/8" from strike plate to the bows center? Short drawing will shoot stiff, I suggest you try drawing the woods to your draw length.

How about a woodie Test Kit form somebody? Maybe 3-rivers?

No need to cut wooden arrows short. I start with full length 32". When they break behind the point I safe them until I have a dozen or two then retaper them and shoot them with their mates. When I do that a second time I go up a step in point weight and shoot those with their mates. So I commonly get three lives from most wooden shafts.

175 grain points are awfully heavy fro wooden shafts; even 145 is fairly heavy. Carbon shafts are much lighter than wooden ones so carbon needs heavier points to get a normal weight arrows. With wooden shafts left full length I start with 100 grain points and after the second trim go to 125.

My cedar shaft arrows typically weigh around 500 grains or more. For a 50'@ 30" selfbow I might start with 55-54# spine shafts. - lbg

I shoot virtually the same weight and draw out of most of my self bows. They all tune at 51-55 or 55-59 spine with 125-145 grain tips.
