Never did this before but after seeing the beaver tail grip done by another Waller, I decided to give it a try. I had a tail that someone had already given me. It was rock hard so I soaked it first to limber it up.
Then I used the yolk of an egg to egg tan it. Never did this before either. Then after rinsing and allowing to drip and dry lightly, I fit it as best as I could. Then cut to fit as best as I could before making holes for the stitching. I used some bow string to stitch with and did mess up one hole as I snugged it up too tight and tore thru.
The tail was brown so I then used black shoe dye to dye it black. The bow is a new Osage bow that I made recently, 62" 48 1/2# @ 26". It is my best bow so far and I plan to hunt with it. So, it was worthy of the beaver tail and will be backed with snake skin as soon as I get another snake (either copperhead or Timber Rattler). I will post pics of the whole bow later.
Anyways, the beaver tail dried fairly hard and feels very good in the hand, so I am really happy with it.

Next time I will use bigger string/lace and make the holes a little bit farther from the edge

Good job. I have some raw tail pieces as well and there is a huge difference in them and the nice beaver tail leather that most people us for grips. I've wondered about thinning it somehow before trying to use it..?

Where my tail tore, was a thin area. don't know if it was from when it was being skinned out. there was a hole near the spot too, maybe shot there, who knows. I can't swear that I tanned it totally or correctly because it was impossible to stretch. Maybe if flat enough, one could lightly sand the raw side.
