So I managed to get 2 turkey wings from my son n law. I haven't made fletching in years but wasn't going to let them go to waste. However, being vision challenged now and with less than desirable feeling with my fingers, I knew that it would be challenge.
I used a 4" feather for a guide and used a 1" aluminum angle to make a pattern for the fletching. I traced the fletching on one side of the angle piece and then used my belt sander to make a pattern. I plan to simply set a ready fletch in it, hold it in place with my finger as I use a hot soldering iron to burn away the excess feather.
So now it was the splitting of the feather, this was quite the challenge in itself as my macular degeneration wasn't helping any. Yeah, blind in one eye mostly and Macular in both eyes.
I started out using a box knife to split down the middle, staying in the groove as best as I could. Distorted vision can play tricks with you mind as I still managed to miss cut a lot of them. I finally got them finished and it wasn't pretty.
Then came the straight clamp and now I found out that I just couldn't get enough light to see how I was doing and managed to ruin a few more. But I haven't given up, will try the soldering iron tomorrow. Barney wasn't any help either as he kept coming in and jumping up on me. Oh well, it is what it is. Yeah, I am quite the butcher LOL!
