Try as I tried, it was not meant to be. I never really looked at the ring structure, I just started in the middle where I had taken the wood down to and assumed that I could chase a ring out to the ends.

Well, turns out that the rings didn't run like you would think but dipped down quite a bit and even to the side a lot. So, it just became a very nice Osage walking stick. I rounded the edges and smoothed it out before adding the rubber tip from a crutch to the bottom for a better grip. I will give it to my 85 year old father this evening when I feed him his supper.

One thing about it, it will make one heck of a walking stick. I bet you could beat a bear off with it if you had to. Clint Eastwood said it in one of his movies, a man has to know his limitations. It is also about when to finally admit defeat and move on. I still have a sister stave to it LOL, probably just as bad.

Hi Jerry, Sorry that the stave wouldn't play ball. Hope that You can MOVE on and find some better wood? BE WELL / WARM / SAFE

Good post! Thanks for sharing. I imagine that’s not the only Osage staff that ended up as a walking stick. Still a very useful piece of golden wood. Outstanding! Well done Sir! :)

Well it wasn't for lack of trying. Sometimes there just isn't a bow to be found in a piece.

As you proceed you will be able to tell quickly if a stave is worth the effort.

Knowing what you can do is the sign of knowledge .... knowing what you can't do is the sign of wisdom ...
