Which is better, polyurethane or lacquer? Only asking because my wife picked up some clear brushing lacquer instead of poly and not sure it's worth returning the lacquer or not. I'm just starting on some Douglas Fir shafts. Thanks in advance.

Lacquer get's hard. It does not expand or flex. Tends to crack. Polyurethane gets hard. It will flex and expand, to some extent. JF

Brushing lacquer is NOT a tough finish. I certainly wouldn't use it on arrows. It scratches very easily. On the other hand WB Poly IS a tough finish that will withstand lots of shooting. I've hand brushed three coats on many hundreds of arrows. That said I like polycrylic now. Handjob same procedure.

Thanks, looks like it will be going back tomorrow.

Lacquer has been used over crowns and cresting on wooden arrows for years and years.

All my gasket lacquer arrows, I've done in the last ten years or so, split and crack. On cedar. Not a Big fan. JF

I gave up on lacquer. If you don't use it frequently you end up tossing a lot. Polyurethane has a much better shelf life, can be wiped on, and THE WIFE doesn't complain about the smell. Happy wife, happy life.

I have used regular automotive lacquer since I started making wood arrows .Now it has its advantages one it dries fast and you can recoat and redip quicker than poly but body man I am sure is right it does crack because it gets gets like glass hard .I have some lacquer that is ancient and is still good that is why I like it.Now it is very stinky stuff and I would not store it in my home like poly .

Poly. No doubt. But I’ve been using a lot of tung oil recently and it is great too. Dries fast and is tough.

I used to use tung oil years ago

don't have a clue why I quit

worked good refinishing bows too

What glue did you use with tung oil? I had the feathers popping off after one shot. I think I used Duco.

Most old gun stocks were finished with lacquer by manufacturers like Winchester.
