I've got a few vintage woven glass bows I'd to refinish and am wondering about the procedure. I've refinished more than a few with solid glass but with those there's no worry about structural damage that may occur by getting into the glass from finish removal. Will simply removing the old finish on woven glass by gently scaping and sanding it off damage and weaken the integrity of woven glass?

Go gentle Paul, you'll be fine. To me the woven sands easier, softer, than the more modern glass harder. JF

The first bow I ever refinished was this 1957 Blackhawk Hornet with woven glass and I too had concerns. It was fairly easy to see when I had removed the old finish by wiping the dust off with a damp cloth and then turning in the light to look for shiny spots that indicated old finish still remaining.

Hopefully you will get some more great tips from true pros like bodymanbowyer and others here like I did.

Please share you results/pics with us and have fun!

Here is a pic of my Hornet all done.

It was pretty easy to see any old finish remaining on the white as there was such a stark contrast.

Paul, your Grizzly static turned out great and I'm sure you'll have the same results with the woven glass bow!

Thanks for the information gentlemen. I knew asking here would result in quality, experienced feedback. Many thanks Paul

I’ve had good luck using a scraper and then light sanding. Here’s my Gelco 900.

Nice. Go slow and use care so as not to get deep into the glass. These bows were finished with varnish back in the day ..real easy to get off
