I've had this bow gifted to me and would like to find out more about it. It is 64" from one string groove to the other. Has brown glass on the back and belly. It has numbers stamped on the riser 54 then vertically 55581. No other markings.

That's an early(ish) American Archery Cheetah, made in Clarendon Hills, IL. Probably around mid 1950's.

What do the numbers mean?

54 is the draw weight and the vertical numbers are the serial number I do believe.

Usually, the first two numbers are the length, so that means 5' 4", not 54#. They did later change it to inches as in 64".

The 54 makes sense, it is a 64" bow.what about the vertical numbers? Is there anything that tells the draw weight? There is bow like this on the Worthpoint web site that has the same numbers stamped on it.

Hoosier, go to vintagearchery.org, and go to Library, catalogs, then American Archery. That page is in the 1957/1957 catalog. You will be able to better see it there.

Would a brace height between 8-9 be ok for this bow? The old brochures for this bow say up to 30" draw. Should I string it and leave it alone for a while to see if it has issues before I try and shoot it, then work up to the 30" draw?

Hoosier, that’s what I’d do; string it at let sit for a few days

Those were good quality bows!

I don't know what the weight is on this bow. The numbers stamped on it don't mean anything to me. I'll have to take it to a bow shop and use their scale.

Does anyone know what the 5 vertical no.s stamped into the riser mean?

54 is 5'4" long, the other numbers are the serial number sequence. No idea if you can extrapolate data from that or how to do it.
