I have been playing with 3 Under shooting lately. I have a simple problem- I shoot all kinds of arrows with all kinds of nocks. Some nocks are not safe for shooting 3 Under..at full draw, they virtually slip off the string. What should I look for in nock fit/design. It seems to be more than just pinching my existing nocks down, some just don't allow for deep seating of the string.

You seem to have narrowed it down, should be simple to avoid the ones that don't work.

I've used Bohning Signatures for many years with no complaints just because they fit the Bemans and GT blems that I shot interchangeably. They are what I call the snap-on type with "dimples/ears" to deter the problem you describe. I still use nock-sets above and below the shaft and have my strings served/doubleserved to fit the nock groove. Any stringmaker will do this. Easton makes one nearly identical ('S' maybe) and I'm sure there are others, but I run the same nocks on all my arrows.

It's pretty easy to adjust either the string serving, or the nocks themselves, to fit properly on the serving. Folks been doing that for a lot of years/decades now. Knowing what the best fit is, is kind of up to you.

This video should help.

If there is a particular nock you want to use a lot amd it fits loose, take an old bow string or dental floss and wrap it around the serving at the point where your nock will fit and that will make the nock snug. Downside is that other nocks that were tight to begin with will be even tighter. Best thing is to decide which style nock you will be using the most and adjust from there.

I like the snap on kind that is loose around the string, like Eastons.

It's the primary reason I don't shoot three under, especially for hunting. Nock is supposed to grip the string "loosely" not with a death grip, and if you do that sure as shoot-in it's gonna pop off when I'm drawing on a nice deer.

You don't have to use real tight nocks to shoot 3 under..never had a problem getting different nocks to fit just tight enough but not too tight. Even shooting split I never liked my nocks real tight.

If the serving is worn or too narrow, you can reserve after you twist two layers of Teflon tape barber pole fashion on the string for an underlayment. Credit to Rick Barbee for the idea and you tube video.

If you can't confidently shoot a deer with the 3 under finger configuration you are not set up properly. Guys have been killing deer that way for decades. I have never had an arrow slip with proper fit shooting 3 under. Put your arrows in groups ,and shoot what works with each bow ,or adjust to make them work. When I am finished with a self bow I use wood arrows, and cut the nocks to fit the string. As mentioned above serve the string to fit the arrow nock, or buy proper nock size for the string you are using.

May not be what you are looking for but I use a different string one for carbons and one for woodies,no dorking around with nocks.

Some nocks to Tite will pinch serving and deform it out of round. Proper fit is important put arrow on string then hold bow horizontal, arrow pointing to ground, arrow should stay on string. Know easy tap string down with finger, arrow should fall off. Also tie a knock under arrow knock to prevent it from sliding down string on release.had two arrows not grouping good always together but a inch more left. Took me awhile but noticed the had different knocks . Change to all same problem solved.

Thanks Gentlemen. My thought is to choose a bow or two for 3 Under style shooting, add a 2nd nock below arrow, and set up a dozen arrows as described above. Seems like a good place to start.

To give you an idea of the pitfalls, consider I have woodies, carbons, aluminum and bows from 25# to 55#, so there is a certain lack of uniformity going on! :)

If elect not to shoot 3 under for whatever reason, but still want to habe that sight picture you can simply change the finger you anchor with.
