We have an outside cat that showed up as a stray. He’s been around for 5 or 6 years now , not many squirrels around now. He sometimes follows me hunting behind the house, he’ll lay down on the ground close to my ladder stand. Interesting to watch him when a bird or squirrel starts getting close. Well the other evening had a buck chasing a doe , the doe came in probably 25 yards away, the buck came in behind me and was passing right by the stand. Pretty sure the cat spooked him as he spooked before he should have been able to smell me. A few years ago had a small buck come in and basically the same thing happened, but he only took a few jumps and looked back, realizing it was just a cat he came back. I probably don’t take my hunting as seriously as I should.

It's been a few years since we have had him. But we used to have a tom cat that would come out to the range behind the house and sit and watch me shoot. Not sure why, but if I had my bow in my hand he was quick to follow. That was a tough cat for sure. We did not have any rodent or varmint issue while we had Oscar. As a younger cat he did jump on a smaller bobcat and sent it back into the woods. IF that had been a full mature bobcat than Oscar would not have lived to tell the tail. :-) Cats, though ALWAYS into mischief, are good hunters. Maybe Frisky should start taking lessons.. HAHAHAHAHAHA

About a month and a half ago, I was sitting in a ladder stand my neighbor uses for rifle hunting. I was watching a just picked corn field tosee what came out. Well there were 6 does came out and were feeding all over the field. I spotted a black cat at the far corner of the field probably close to 200 hundred yards from me. The deer were off to my left about 80 yards at the opposite corner of the field. The wind was coming from SW which was from the cat to the deer. The lead doe must have caught the scent cause she walked head out, nose out all the way across the field toward that cat. As they got closer, I lost sight of the cat. The deer mingled around a bit then went to feeding in that area. Pretty soon I see the deer coming up a weed row toward me. As they're getting a bit closer, that cat popped out of the weeds with the deer following. The cat was slinking along tail between it's legs and it finally bolted for the tree line I was in. Then the deer went bavk to feeding. Crazy to watch

We have Peregrine Falcons that tear up the Fox Squirrels. They don't eat the cats.

A word on squirrels and cats. My cat Teddy nearly died and was on intravenous fluids for 5 days. Two days after he got off fluids, I let him outside in the yard with me. I turned my back on him, to clean an eaves, and I heard sounds of a fight. Turning around, I saw Ted had an adult squirrel by the throat! I ran to stop it, but it was too late. The squirrel had succumbed to his wounds. Besides the throat grab, I found fatal puncture wounds to the neck. Teddy is a squirrel murderer and shouldn't be allowed out. Now, when he goes out, I have to be right there. I have a dozen squirrels in the yard, all day, and he'd kill them, left and right, if allowed to do so.
