While for most of us, our main focus is on the bigger game like deer, hogs, elk, antelope, moose etc, a lot of us still love to hunt the small game. There is quite a variety of small game out there for us to hunt from birds to mammals, fish and frogs etc.
Of course each critter may require a certain or preferred arrowhead type. Fish require fish heads and birds usually wire types. Flu flu's or not, up to us. The heads for rabbit and squirrel are many from the very simple to the expensive ones.
Small game can be as much or even more challenging for us with a trad bow. We can sit or still hunt for many of them. I have even used beagles to rabbit hunt and this can be pretty exciting. For the rabbits, I have used everything from Judo points to a washer behind a field point. Heck, I used a lot of old 38 special and 357 brass, some plain, some with a small bolt and wingnut added thru the primer pocket. Also have used the good ole rubber tip blunts. I have actually shot thru rabbits with them at close range.
Squirrels, pretty much the same type heads but with more Flu Flu's. There is quite the satisfaction in hearing the solid thud of your arrow hitting a rabbit or a squirrel. The awesome thing about small game is that we can do it anytime except heavy rain. Hunting in the snow can be a blast but you had better have the right kind of tip on or you might be losing arrows in the snow.
Small critters on the move can be pretty tough, sudden moves like a squirrel makes can be very close misses. But no matter what, the small critters can be a lot of fun and great practice for us. Even some good eats if we get enough of them. Some may look at them as kid's stuff but that's ok, I'm still a kid at heart and it's still very much hunting in my book. To me, it is a form of up graded stump shooting, more practice for the bigger stuff. And yes, sometimes that small critter is hard earned. But the smile says it all, just a kid!
