Anyone own an all Osage Mahantango raven from Jim Martin? I am getting ready to put one on order and just can't decide on what overlays to get. I thought some picture might help. Any thoughts? I guess micarta is a safe choice?

Here’s the tip overlays…blk micarta and bocote. As the Osage darken over the years the better it looks.

Nice combo

Thanks, Yewbender! That will be my choice for sure. I was worried about wood combos that may change over time in color and then no longer look as striking. In this case my research seems to point out that they will continue to enhance each other over time! I will call and order tonight! Thanks for responding! Like I need another bow! LOL

Kaw369, your welcome and don’t worry because in next couple of months i will be having Jim build me a string follow Redtail. Like i need another also but that will make #7 of his bows.

Placed my order last night. Jim had plenty of suggestions and made the process very easy! By the way Yewbender, Jim smoke highly of you! I also found out that Dennis (shick) is fishing for a new bow there too. Now there is a guy I haven't seen in years! A straight up fellow and fun to shoot with!

Kaw369, Jim is for sure a hidden Jem in the bow making business…Just a great humble man. I always enjoy chatting with him by phone or hanging out at his shop… even if he puts me to work! That Shicky fellow is a good egg too and yes he has talked to Jim and me on thoughts on a build. Well i’ll be looking forward to seeing pic’s when you get your bow.

Btw, Jim called me couple nights ago to catchup on hunting and other stuff. He told me he was having his boy send me pic’s of wood….and….well…i like what i seen so now just have to pick a day with him and head to his shop cause a bow will be ordered!

I almost forgot, many years ago Jim made an Osage limb raven but forget the wood in handle that had a longbow grip…that was a great shooting bow. I had plenty of chances to buy it but never did. We still talk about that so down the road maybe bow #8 will be ordered.

My Kestrel is Osage with cocobola. I’ve got a few of Jim’s bow’s but can’t compete with Gary.

You guys have inspired me; Meeting Jim Saturday to pick out my yew/myrtle woods. Retiring my Bighorn Ramhunter and replacing it with a lighter weight kestrel. I'll keep you all posted. Shick

Hey Paul, you can but you need to order more bows lol!

Shick, I would come up sat and order mine but looks like i’ll be hunting for a buck.

What are the various models he makes? I see the Raven is a 50's recurve. What is the difference between the Kestrel and Red Tail?

He makes a Classic, String follow not on his pamphlet

CStyles, The Kestrel has deflex and reflex in the limb…R/D bow. The Redtail is an ASL(American Semi Longbow) aka Hill Style after Howard Hill. The Redtail is a straight limb bow with Reflex towards the tips (backset) when bow unstrung the tips curve to the back side of the bow. This gives it a lil more ump on the shot. The Redtail Classic is the same but the tips are oppisite(deflex) also known as String Follow. This bow is smoother on draw and more forgiving on the shot. Hope this helps!

I also forgot to add the handles are different between the Kestrel and Redtails.
