So I've recently gone down the ilf rabbit hole. After some research and playing around with some bolt-downs, I went down to Lancaster Archery to get my hands on a couple risers that I was interested in. I like the feel of a short riser with long limbs and it seems to work well at my 27"draw length. I ended up with a Galaxy Sear 17" that I mated to a pair of 45# long maple/glass limbs that I had from a previous project, making a 62" bow. This turned out to be a very smooth, accurate combo, but I'm a little underwhelmed with the limb's speed and cast. Already itching to try a little higher performance limb - thus the rabbit hole. Anyway, I've always been a fan of bamboo limbs, so do any of you have experience with WNS Explore bamboo core glass or carbon? Seems like a reasonably priced upgrade? Open to any suggestions.

Long limbs at 27" draw are not working at anything like peak efficiency. Mediums, maybe even shorts if they're of really good design and materials. (Like bamboo and/or carbon.)

I too draw 27 and change, use a 19" riser and mediums for 62". (The only shorts I tried on that riser didn't work for me but those were of an older model.)

Long riser and short limbs is what will help, even extra short limbs.

Longer riser, not necessarily long riser.

I'm with Dana, as far as limb length goes; I'll add I don't care what length riser you use, 27" DL and long limbs will be smooth but not approaching fast. with your 17" riser & 27" DL, I'll suggest mediums or even shorts, and run them mostly bolts in, or at most 1 turn out, and you'll pick up speed over the longs....and if you stack - which is doubtful, turning bolts just a single turn can delay it to just past your DL.

also I would not buy new limbs, buy used, and pick up some of the top medal winning limbs from 5-10 years ago for on the cheap, like WINEX, WW XQ-1s, Samick Masters, EXTREME BF, Extreme, Agulla Ultra, Sebastien Flute Ultimate Pros, Hoyt Gold Medalist, Sky Conquest. My favorites.

Give them a try. Also, with your 27" draw, I'd recommend medium or even short limbs if you are interested in speed. I've shot a 17" riser with longs and I have a 31" draw with trad bows. So you can definitely go with shorter limbs if you want.

Uuhka Gobi is the best shooting limb I’ve ever touched. No close seconds for me. The guys have you on the right limb length path.

Mine was noisy as a shopping cart. I tried everything

I have several combos I play with and none are loud. I have a vast self bow back ground and am more sensitive to bow noise than many. String material and arrow weight is a good starting point. Mechanical Rests and metal risers aren’t as quiet as wood risers and off shelf shooting.

Yeah, I was just trying to utilize the long limbs that I have. Definitely will go shorter. With a bamboo core, is carbon worth the $ over glass? Those Gobis are definitely on my radar but unless I find a smoking deal used, they aren’t in the budget. Thanks for all the input.

Check out Alternative Archery. You can save $200 on them.

Paul, carbon has a different feel than glass. It's hard to describe. Perhaps before buying try some carbon limbs.

I have shot a few and I know what you mean-there is a different feeling and sound. The only super curves I’ve shot were Border and they felt REALLY different.

First few shots at 22yds with the current setup.

Long limbs with shorter draws is not enhancing speed. Super Recurves often open too late with long limbs for shorter draws. Don't shoot longer than Medium with your draw, especially with a 17" riser.

m -

There's nothing wrong with a 62" bow for a 27" draw. Sure you'll gain a few fps with a longer riser and shorter limbs, and I mean a few, like a couple, maybe, but you'll give up a fair amount of smoothness. Not worth it in my book.

Going from $100 limbs to $700+ limbs will get up about 10 fps maybe, unless you go to "super curves", but then you'll loose stability - if you're shooting that well.

Curious - what arrow weight and have you shot the thing through a chronograph?

Viper out.

If you're close enough to go by Lancaster's, as you say, see if you can try the Uukha SX50. I think it's the lowest price Uukha but will shoot right with any upper price limb. They also sometimes offer open box sales and end of model sales to keep an eye peeled for. I think the shorts would work fine for you.

I have a set of longbow limbs, Morrison "A" {as in extra short} that are 53@26 If that would help you. Thy are fast. Photos available if interested.

I have that same riser and had some Samick R carbon foam limbs in long. good shooter but I recently got some Uuhka copy type limbs, Nika C 1 in medium. Made a good shooter a great shooter. $140 TYD can beat these limbs on that riser, so far.

I always said uukhas were out of my price range untill i finally pulled the trigger on my 1st pair. Since, nothing else compares other than my border cv9's. When it comes to aging shoulders, back and neck a guy needs all the help he can get. If you want a 1 and done then uukhas gobi or sx-50's are the way to go. Theyre worth saving up for.

Viper- 415gr. Easton .600 , 44# on the fingers at my draw. No chronograph but really seem do drop a lot between 25 and 30 yds. Thanks guys. You’ve given me lots to think about.

That’s some pretty good shooting.

I see lots of experimenting in your future. There are so many choices.

Based on what your doing you’ll land on certain set ups that are just a little nicer for your needs.

A couple of things that I felt while messing around. 19 inch risers worked good for me but the next one will be 21. There is a big difference in feel of limbs. Most that I shot didn’t exceed 500 bucks. But a cheap set of Galaxy limbs feel different than a mid level set of Uuhkas. For me Trad tech carbon/woods were quiet and seemed like a decent value. Another thing I felt was that I’d never own another ILF riser without a plunger. Being able tune with a plunger is a major benefit of ILF set ups.

Have fun with it.
